Founded as a secular college - as opposed to the religious Oxford and Cambridge - UCL began to accept everyone on equal terms, regardless of their gender, religious views and social status. Cambridge

The second oldest university in the UK was founded 800 years ago by scientists who left Oxford because a local student was involved in the murder of a resident of the city. Traditions are very important for Cambridge: for 700 years, a wooden spoon has been awarded to the student with the lowest score.
