đŸ± What is the normal temperature for a cat. Why is she like this. How to measure. What if the scores are high or low. How to increase and how to bring down the body temperature of a cat.

Content

If you stroke any purr, it will seem that cat body temperature somewhat higher than in humans. For pets, indicators exceeding human ones by several degrees are the norm. The parameters of the cat's temperature are discussed somewhat differently than the human ones. But an increase or decrease in normal indicators can signal the occurrence of some processes that indicate a pet’s disease.

Normal temperature in cats and kittens

Indicators of normal temperature in an animal are formed due to the work of internal organs: the nervous system, pituitary gland, hypothalamus. The study of the totality of all processes that affect the performance continues today.

The normal temperature for a cat is in the range of 37.5° - 39°C. Such a spread is indicated due to the fact that nature has provided an individual indicator for each cat. For some cat it is 38.5 degrees, and for another 39 degrees.

In the morning, the indicators are usually somewhat underestimated, while in the evening, especially after an active pastime, the values \u200b\u200bmay be higher. Also, the indicators depend on the size of the animal: large individuals have lower temperature indicators than small cats.

A small kitten is characterized by a higher temperature than an adult cat. This can be explained by the high mobility of kittens.

Body temperature of Sphynx cats

In addition to viral and bacterial infections, the list of causes includes poisoning with stale food, and even an excess of salts in the body. Due to excess salts, the breakdown of proteins and tissues begins.

Treatment of temperature in a cat

Neither hypothermia nor hyperthermia should be ignored. As mentioned above, there are serious reasons for lowering or raising the temperature regime, which must be found and eliminated. It is better to seek the advice of a veterinarian: it may be necessary to conduct an examination and take tests.

It is unlikely that there will be such a person who, having got a cat, would be indifferent to her well-being. Everyone knows that an increase in temperature is a signal that not everything is good in the body. But not everyone knows what body temperature is considered normal for a cat and how to measure it. But the timeliness of contacting the veterinarian largely depends on this. Let's try to understand these issues.

Thermoregulation of cats

Thermoregulation is the ability of animals to maintain body temperature within the most suitable limits for life, even if the ambient temperature differs significantly. Cats are mammals. To determine the ambient temperature, they, like other representatives of this group, have special sensitive organs located in the skin - these are cold and heat receptors.

Receptor - a sensitive nerve ending or specialized cell that converts perceived irritation into nerve impulses, which, in turn, transmit information to the brain.

The number of cold and heat receptors in cats is not the same. There are many more of the first, and they are not very deep in relation to the surface of the skin; heat receptors are located deeper. That is why almost all cats like warmth and only in extreme heat prefer cool places.

Cold receptors are closer to the surface of the skin than heat receptors.

Cats have several ways to maintain a normal body temperature:

The listed methods of cooling are not always enough. It happens that the best method not to overheat is to simply go into the shade. This is what cats do if their health deteriorates due to the heat.

There are breeds that are more prone to overheating, such as longhaired ones. They get heatstroke faster.

Changing body position allows cats to both increase heat dissipation and retain heat. For example, in summer you can often see mustachioed ones lying stretched out in the sun, the same way animals behave near the battery in winter. But as soon as it gets cooler, the cat immediately curls up into a ball.

Like other mammals, cats can retain body heat by contracting the small blood vessels of the skin: in the cold, the vessels constrict, and heat transfer decreases, in hot weather, they expand, and heat transfer, respectively, increases. In addition, cats can fluff up, thus increasing in volume. The resulting air layer reduces heat loss, and the cat does not freeze. It is more difficult for hairless cats in this respect, in the cold they freeze very quickly.

By fluffing out their fur, the cat reduces heat loss.

The above methods of thermoregulation are more relevant to adult cats. Kittens do not immediately become capable of independent thermoregulation. At temperatures below 18 ° C, babies can freeze.

Normal temperature readings

Almost all of my friends have or once had cats, but no one could answer the question of what temperature is normal for pets. They said that it was higher than that of people, but no one knew by how much. Almost all of the people I interviewed believe that it is not necessary to measure the temperature of cats. You should focus more on the well-being of the animal, and even more so, do not give pets any medication. To be honest, I have never measured the temperature of a cat on my own, although I had three of them, one of them lived for 17 years, was ill and underwent surgery.

Body temperature, which is considered normal in cats, ranges from 38 ° C to 39 ° C. Like people, animals can have individual characteristics, and the temperature may deviate from accepted norms. Sometimes this can even be related to the age of the cat or the time of day (the temperature is usually lower during sleep, and during wakefulness and activity it rises). In grown-up kittens, the body temperature is half a degree higher than in adult cats, and in newborns, values of 40–40.5 ° C are considered normal. goes down.

The temperature does not depend on whether the breed is large or small, long-haired or hairless. So, in Sphynx cats, the normal temperature is the same as in Maine Coon cats.

Causes of an increase in body temperature in a cat

The body temperature of a cat can rise, signaling various problems in her body.

Hyperthermia - overheating, the accumulation of excess heat in the human or animal body, caused by external factors that impede heat transfer to the external environment or increase the flow of heat from the outside, which is expressed in an increase in the overall body temperature.

Most often, fever in cats is associated with various infections. But the cause can be oncological, autoimmune and other diseases, as well as unexplained factors.

A cat's body temperature may rise, signaling an illness

Fever requiring a visit to the veterinarian

Serious diseases, in addition to high fever, are accompanied by other symptoms that are hard to miss. It can be:

  • Viral infections. Accompanied by a runny nose, discharge from the eyes, disorders of the digestive system.
  • bacterial infections. The cat loses its appetite and may vomit or have diarrhea.
  • Worm infestations. An increase in temperature may be accompanied by digestive disorders, depression.
  • Allergies and poisoning. Manifested by a characteristic rash and disorders of the digestive tract.
  • Endocrine disorders, such as obesity or excessive weight loss, may be accompanied by a slight increase in the temperature of the animal (up to 39.8 ° C).
  • Tumors. The cat loses weight, she begins to lose hair, digestion processes are disturbed.
  • Purulent inflammation after injuries and injections, postpartum mastitis (inflammation of the mammary gland). In this case, you can notice painful seals at the site of inflammation.

In addition, the cat should be taken to the veterinarian when the following symptoms are observed:

  • frequent rise in temperature, even to low rates;
  • a sharp jump in temperature up to 41 ° C;
  • for several days, the cat's body temperature does not fall below 39.5 ° C.

It is not recommended to bring down the temperature of a cat on its own using medications. Not all antipyretics used by humans can be used in animals. Also, folk methods should not be used, for example, to cover the animal with ice. You can try to water the cat and move to a quiet place.

Hyperthermia, which should not cause concern

An increase in temperature in cats happens due to overheating. This can happen:

In case of overheating, the animal often breathes, it has a rapid heartbeat. You can handle situations like this on your own. To do this, you need to move the cat to a cool place and offer water.

There may be an increase in temperature during estrus. This is temporary and no veterinary attention is required.

Hyperthermia in a cat can be caused by severe stress, such as a change of scenery or owner. Such a temperature deviation is accompanied by a violation of the behavior of the animal, loss of mood and appetite. But when the pet calms down, this condition goes away by itself.

The cause of a slight increase in temperature may be overeating in kittens, the temperature returns to normal after a while.

Causes of fever in cats

In addition to an increase in body temperature, a cat can also experience its decrease, the so-called hypothermia.

Hypothermia is a state of the body in which the body temperature drops below what is required to maintain normal metabolism and the functioning of all systems and organs.

Experts divide hypothermia into 3 types:

  • mild (body temperature within 32–35 ° C);
  • moderate (28–32 o C);
  • deep (below 28 ° C).

A common cause of low temperatures is hypothermia. To avoid it, you need to watch your pet and not let the cat go for a walk in cold weather. A low body temperature may also indicate a cat's disease.

The following are possible causes of a low temperature in a cat:

  • some bacteria and viruses (for example, enteritis virus);
  • weakened body;
  • loss of appetite and weight loss;
  • consequence of anesthesia;
  • development of a malignant tumor;
  • kidney disease (typical for older animals);
  • trauma;
  • violations of metabolic processes;
  • consequence of poisoning;
  • dehydration;
  • severe bleeding (internal or external);
  • heart disease;
  • diseases of the nervous system.

If the temperature of the animal is lowered, then the following symptoms may be observed:

  • shiver;
  • apathy;
  • slow breathing;
  • violation of the heart rhythm.

The cat may seek a warmer place and sleep more than usual.

How to normalize the temperature of the animal

First of all, when the body temperature drops, the cat should be warmed up.

For this you need:

  1. Bring the animal indoors (if it has been outside before).
  2. Be sure to dry the cat if it gets wet (for example, using a hair dryer).
  3. Offer a warm drink, such as milk or broth.
  4. Wrap in a warm blanket and put a heating pad next to it, heated to 39 degrees.
  5. Check the temperature every 10 minutes.
  6. After the temperature returns to normal, give the animal food.

When to See a Veterinarian for Hypothermia

You should contact your veterinarian for hypothermia if:

  • if the above actions did not lead to normalization of the temperature;
  • if the temperature is lowered to 36 degrees and continues to fall.

It is better to take the cat to the veterinary clinic on your own. The doctor will conduct a full examination of the animal and try to diagnose the cause of the low temperature, as well as prescribe treatment.
The veterinary clinic can do:

  • enema with a warm solution;
  • dropper with warming solution.

Undesirable effects of hypothermia

A low temperature in a cat should not be ignored by the owner. With prolonged hypothermia, a cat may experience health problems, such as:

  • meningitis (inflammation of the meninges);
  • pneumonia (inflammation of the lungs);
  • nephritis, pyelonephritis (inflammatory kidney disease).

How to measure a cat's body temperature

Today, there are many varieties of thermometers that allow you to quickly measure the body temperature of a cat. We list the main models:

  • Electronic universal thermometer with flexible tip. This device most accurately and quickly shows the temperature of the body of the animal. It is suitable for measuring rectally; in the armpit and orally, cats do not measure the temperature. After a while (maximum 3 minutes), a special sound will be heard, indicating that the temperature change is completed. Electronic or digital thermometers are fast and accurate. Unlike glass mercury, they are not as fragile. The disadvantage of an electronic thermometer can only be considered the price, it is an order of magnitude higher than that of a mercury thermometer.
  • Electronic universal thermometer with rigid tip. The same properties as the previous model, only it must be used rectally more carefully due to the hard tip.
  • Infrared ear thermometer. The tip of this device is designed in such a way that you can safely measure the temperature in the cat's ear. The procedure does not disturb the animal, and the temperature measurement is fast and accurate. The price of infrared thermometers is almost an order of magnitude higher than electronic ones. Advantages of the device:
    • speed (up to 30 seconds);
    • ease of use;
    • security.
  • Non-contact infrared thermometers. You do not need to touch the cat at all - the device will measure the temperature from a distance. But such thermometers, unfortunately, have drawbacks - some experts believe that their readings are approximate.
  • Mercury thermometer. This is a well-known device used to measure body temperature. It comes with a rounded tip - it can be used rectally. Such a thermometer is not the best tool for measuring a cat's body temperature. You will have to wait at least 7 minutes for the result, and during all this time you will need to hold your cat and persuade her to be calm. In addition, a mercury thermometer is fragile, and mercury is a dangerous substance. If such a device breaks, then you can injure the animal and poison yourself with poisonous fumes.

Infrared ear thermometer shows results quickly A regular mercury thermometer can be used to take a cat's temperature rectally. Universal electronic thermometer can be used to measure the temperature of a cat A universal electronic thermometer with a flexible tip is most convenient for measuring the temperature of a cat Infrared non-contact thermometer determines body temperature instantly and at a distance, but may have measurement errors

How to measure temperature

Often the owners believe that measuring the temperature of a cat is a useless and troublesome task. But sometimes it is better to suffer a little and do it than to miss the time to see a doctor.

Rectal temperature measurement method

The rectal (anal) opening is the first opening under the cat's tail.

The figure shows where the rectal opening is located in cats

How to measure temperature rectally:

  1. Carefully read the instructions that came with the thermometer.
  2. Choose a time when the cat is calm.
  3. Take a thin blanket (towel, blanket), wrap the cat around, leaving only the tail and head open.
  4. Lubricate the tip of the thermometer with cream.
  5. Insert the thermometer into the cat's anus (1-1.5 cm).
  6. Tilt the thermometer slightly (should touch the rectal mucosa).
  7. Wait for a special signal.
  8. Take out the thermometer.
  9. Determine the temperature.
  10. Wash the thermometer.
  11. Praise, treat the cat.

Follow all steps carefully, gently persuading the cat.

Determination of temperature with an infrared device

You can measure a cat's temperature using an infrared thermometer. How to take ear measurements:

  1. Read the instructions supplied with the infrared thermometer.
  2. Hold the cat's head.
  3. Point the thermometer at the animal's ear.
  4. Wait for the signal.
  5. Take out the thermometer.
  6. Determine the temperature.
  7. Wipe the thermometer.

Ear thermometer does not cause anxiety to the cat

Despite the existence of modern thermometers for measuring body temperature, in practice, veterinary clinics use conventional mercury thermometers and, according to owners, do not stand on ceremony with pets. As a rule, temperature measurement accompanies the pre-vaccination examination. Such a procedure at home is a useful thing, but, fortunately, it has to be carried out very rarely.

When getting a mustachioed pet, you need to be prepared not only for joyful moments, but also for the fact that a four-legged friend may need help. Measuring a cat's temperature is not an easy procedure. But every owner should know how to spend it. To be able to quickly measure the temperature, to have a general idea of the features of thermoregulation of cats is necessary in order to help your pet in time if he gets sick.

Every cat and cat owner needs to know the normal temperature of their pets. Body temperature indicators in felines, as in all animals, may vary slightly, without leaving normal limits, depending on the age of the pet, time of day and physical activity.

Temperatures may be slightly lower in the morning than in the evening. With a long stay in extreme heat, with stress and excitement, and even with overeating, a natural response of the body is possible in the form of a slight increase in temperature above the optimum, but within acceptable values, which also does not require emergency action.

How to understand that a cat has a temperature

To date, the only accurate method to understand that a cat has a temperature is to use a thermometer. However, there are several signs that indicate a cat is not feeling well.

  • Lethargic or inappropriate behavior
  • Loss of appetite
  • increased thirst
  • Rapid or vice versa rare breathing

It is impossible to accurately determine the elevated body temperature “by the nose”! Of course, in a healthy cat, the nose should be cold and damp, but only in an active cat under ideal conditions. The humidity of the nose and its local temperature are affected by the activity of the pet, nervous excitement, the desire to drink and eat, and the environmental climate.

How to take a cat's temperature

So, using a thermometer is the only sure way to determine body temperature in animals. But which side to approach and how to measure the temperature of a cat?

There are 2 types of thermometers used for animals:

  • Classic thermometer
  • ear

Classic thermometer can be alcohol and electronic. It is used rectally. You can measure the temperature of a cat and not rectally.

A more modern device, its use is less stressful.

How to take a cat's temperature rectally

  • Ask an assistant to help hold and calm the cat during the procedure. During the measurement of temperature, most pets behave calmly, but especially temperamental cats may resist. It is better to entrust such animals to a veterinarian. An aggressive cat can harm itself or its owner.
  • Prepare a thermometer. It is better to use a veterinary or children's electronic thermometer. Temperature measurement with such a device is more comfortable and takes only 2-3 minutes.
  • Wipe the tip with alcohol and lubricate it with Vaseline or Levomikol ointment.
  • Raise your tail. Slowly, with twisting movements, lead the thermometer into the anus to a depth of 2-3 cm. Hold the thermometer until the beep sounds.
  • After the signal, do not rush to remove the thermometer. Make sure that the device has worked correctly and the numbers do not increase. On some models, the signal is triggered ahead of schedule and for an accurate result, you need to hold the device in the rectum for another 20-40 seconds.
  • Evaluate the measurement result, and wipe the tip of the thermometer liberally with an alcohol wipe.

How to measure temperature with an ear thermometer

  • Calm down the cat. Let the thermometer sniff, show the pet that the device is not dangerous. When measuring the temperature in the ear, as a rule, you can do without an assistant.
  • Wipe the tip of the thermometer with an alcohol wipe.
  • While supporting the pet's head, insert the thermometer into the ear canal. Most cats are indifferent to the procedure. Do not try to push the thermometer very deep, so as not to damage the eardrum.
  • Wait for the beep and make sure that the indicators do not increase.
  • Remove the thermometer from your ear and compare the result with the norm.
  • Disinfect the tip of the thermometer again.

My cat has a high temperature, what should I do?

If you find that your cat has a fever, don't panic. An increase in body temperature occurs with infections, infection with worms, non-infectious inflammatory processes in organs, allergic reactions and some surgical diseases.

Elevated temperature (hyperthermia) is a signal of the presence of pathology, therefore, first of all, it is necessary to determine the severity of the process.

Severity of hyperthermia
Temperature Severity Owner actions
39.5 - 40.0 C° Light 1. Do not inject antipyretics from a human first aid kit. Many drugs used on humans are toxic to cats!
2. Use physical cooling methods. Use ice, provide the cat with plenty of fluids.
40.1 - 40.5 C° Medium 1. Diagnostics required! Call the veterinary clinic immediately and tell the administrator that the cat has a high fever. You will be advised what drugs can be used to bring down the temperature and will definitely appoint an appointment in the very near future.
2. Use physical methods of cooling, provide the cat with water and rest.
>= 40.6°C heavy emergency. Temperatures above 41.0 are life-threatening!
The pet needs an urgent appointment with a doctor, placement of a cat in a hospital, intensive care and droppers to restore the salt balance.

Be careful with kittens. Babies have weak immunity and high susceptibility to viral diseases. Even a slight increase in temperature is dangerous to health and delay in proper treatment can be fatal!

Low temperature in a cat

Low temperature in cats is less common than high. This condition is called hypothermia. It is characteristic of hypothermia, shock, the post-anesthetic period and sometimes the oncological process.

  • It should be borne in mind that it is perfectly normal for pregnant cats to drop the temperature by 1 degree one to two days before delivery.
  • Temperatures below 36 degrees are life-threatening!

Put a heating pad on the cat and wrap it in a warm blanket. Offer your cat a warm drink or low-fat broth. Call the veterinary clinic. Depending on the severity of the process, droppers and intensive care may be required.

Being the happy owner of a fluffy lump, you need to learn a lot about him: the nuances in behavior, and feeding, first aid for malaise . In the latter case, an important role is played by the determination of body temperature in a cat.

Optimal temperatures for a domestic cat

Before you adopt a kitten, you need to learn a lot about him.

The body temperature of a cat, like that of other living beings, is the first and very important indicator of its health. To maintain it at the proper level, many systems and organs are involved: the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, the central nervous system. And even at present, scientists have not been able to fully figure out how this most complex process proceeds.

In a healthy, active cat, a temperature of 37.5-39 ° C is considered a normal criterion.

However, there is a small nuance - each individual animal has its own, individual indicator, and the owner must know its meaning.

The normal temperature for a cat is 37.5-39 degrees.

This is necessary so that when visiting a veterinary clinic, a specialist can correctly diagnose and prescribe treatment. Let's say for one cat, the normal temperature is 39 ° C, and for another, of the same breed, 38 ° C. The difference is insignificant - only one degree, but it can also be decisive.

The veterinarian may decide that 39 ° C for your pet is too high and indicates an inflammatory process, although for her this is an absolute norm. And, on the contrary, he considers this temperature indicator to be quite natural, and for a cat with a normal temperature of 37.5 ° C, it will turn out to be an alarming factor.

For this reason, you should not be lazy, and when she is absolutely healthy, playful and feels good.

The temperature of the cat should be measured when she feels well.

Interestingly, the body temperature of hairless breeds of cats does not differ from the more fluffy counterparts, despite the fact that when you touch their bare skin, they may seem to be much hotter.

This indicator is absolutely the same for all breeds of cats, whether they are sphinxes, British, Persians or ordinary mongrel whiskers-tailed.

Normal temperature deviation

After active games, the body temperature of the cat increases.

A temperature deviation of 0.5 °C during the day is considered normal: in the morning it is slightly lower, and in the evening it rises a little.

The value also depends on the activity of the animal: at rest, the temperature is normal, and after active games or excitement it increases.

Body temperature in kittens

Body temperature in kittens is slightly higher than in adult cats.

Another thing - kittens! All organs and tissues of these babies are in a state of increased growth, and the thermoregulation system cannot yet boast of coherence. Therefore, the body temperature of kittens is slightly higher than that of adults, and is considered normal in the range of 39-39.5 ° C. It decreases and becomes constant around the third month of a kitten's life. However, for each owner, the individual indicator of his pet is of great importance!

Temperature after cat spaying

After sterilization and castration, the temperature of the cat goes down.

After undergoing sterilization and castration operations, the body temperature of the cat may decrease.

This is considered the norm and indicates the transferred anesthesia, stress, a decrease in pressure as a result of taking medications. The animal must be warmed by placing its bedding in a warm place or wrapping it in a blanket.

After sterilization, a cat may experience during the first three days, which is also allowed. However, if the temperature does not decrease for a long time, it is necessary to seek the advice of a veterinarian, as it may be a sign of infection in the body or the development of a focus of inflammation.

How to take a cat's temperature

To measure the temperature of a cat, use a thermometer that is inserted into the anus of the animal.

To measure the temperature in cats, a mercury rectal thermometer is traditionally used, which is inserted into the anus of the animal and held in the same position for 3 minutes.

An ordinary “human” thermometer is not suitable for these purposes, since it is characterized by increased fragility and, in order to obtain information, it will have to be held not for 3, but for 10 minutes.

It is not surprising that cats endure such a procedure with great irritation, and therefore it is necessary to prepare for it in advance and, if possible, carry it out together with an assistant.

More convenient to use is digital analog mercury thermometer. Its modern models are able to take measurements in just a few seconds.

Pets can avoid discomfort by using modern devices: an infrared ear thermometer or a non-contact thermometer. In the first case, readings are obtained by contacting the device with the skin in the ear cavity. The procedure is completely painless and lasts a few seconds. The only contraindication is inflammation in the ears of the animal.

The most convenient for owners and their pets is an infrared non-contact thermometer, which allows you to get the necessary measurements only when the device touches the pet's body and waits 10 seconds. The device is accurate, and its error is only 0.3°C.

Critical temperature in cats

If the cat has a high temperature, you need to wrap it in a towel soaked in cold water and urgently go to the veterinary clinic!

Exceeding the body temperature of a cat by 1 ° C is already significant, and in this case, an urgent consultation with a specialist is required.

At critically high rates - 40.5 ° C and above, it is necessary to wrap the pet in a towel soaked in cold water and wrung out, and urgently go to the veterinary clinic.

No less alarming symptom is low temperature (37 ° C and below). As a rule, it appears with blood loss and severe hypothermia of the animal. But it can also be caused by hearts, malfunctions in the endocrine and nervous systems. In this case, the cat is wrapped in a blanket and urgently sent to the veterinarian.

Video on how to measure the temperature of a cat

The physiology of all cats, regardless of breed, obeys the same laws of nature, which say that at a temperature of 42 degrees, an irreversible process of protein coagulation starts in the body. And the differences in thermoregulation in long-haired Maine Coons, short-haired British and hairless sphinxes are due to objective reasons.

What is the norm

The normal temperature for adult cats is between 38 and 39 degrees. In healthy kittens, it should be half a degree higher, from 38.5 to 39.5 degrees: babies grow quickly, the cells in their bodies divide at an accelerated pace. But deviations from these indicators do not always indicate illness: cats can react to cold, heat, stress. And during active games, the temperature background also rises. However, if the owner noticed that the behavior of the animal has changed - the look has become "absent", the cat has become lethargic or aggressive, refuses to eat and communicate, sleeps more than usual - it's time to take the temperature. If the problem is really serious, then the success of treatment will depend entirely on the timely start of treatment.

To control the temperature in cats, the following medical devices are used:

  • Digital Thermometer;
  • mercury thermometer;
  • infrared ear thermometer.

Veneration of the cat in ancient Egypt - interesting facts

Which thermometer to choose

All of the above devices have their own characteristics. So, the results of a mercury thermometer used for the rectal method of measuring temperature in the rectum are considered the most accurate, but the process itself takes a longer time. An electronic thermometer performs this task faster, however, its results are less accurate. Cats tolerate measurement with an infrared ear thermometer more calmly, but if at this moment there is some kind of inflammation in the auricle, then the instrument’s readings will have an error.

For rectal measurements, both the mercury thermometer and the electronic thermometer must be coated with Vaseline or Vaseline oil. Other oils should not be used: cats have very delicate skin and a high tendency to be allergic to various substances. Given the concern of a sick animal, it is still preferable to use an electronic thermometer. A frightened cat can simply knock a mercury thermometer out of the owner's hand, which is fraught with dangerous infection of the apartment if the thermometer's glass bulb breaks.

What do temperature changes indicate?

Cats have such natural conditions in which a short-term increase or decrease in temperature is considered normal by veterinarians. After sterilization, an elevated temperature of 39.5 degrees can last for several days. Sterilization is an abdominal operation, and during this period the so-called inflammatory mediators are activated in the body, which is a protective reaction of the body to a foreign invasion. But if this temperature persists for more than five days, the cat must be shown to the veterinarian.

Pregnancy and childbirth also make their own adjustments. Two days before giving birth, the temperature in a cat can reach only 37 degrees. The day before lambing, it sometimes drops to 36.8 degrees and is considered normal. A day after giving birth, the temperature should rise to a level of 37.5-39.2 degrees. But if the results of thermometers are very different from the norm up or down, this is a reason to contact the veterinarian. A high temperature signals an inflammatory process, a low one indicates weakness and exhaustion of the body. In both cases, urgent intervention by a specialist and an accurate diagnosis are necessary.

Urgent measures for low and high temperatures

If a cat does not have a “good reason” for a low temperature in the form of preparation for childbirth, it must be urgently taken to the veterinarian. But it is not always possible to immediately go to the veterinary clinic: it does not work at night or the owner and the sick pet at that moment were in the country. Before the appointment with the veterinarian, you should try to independently raise the temperature to normal levels, using improvised means - a heating pad or a plastic bottle with warm water, attaching them to the cat's back. Warming elements cannot be applied to the stomach: since the diagnosis has not yet been made and the exact cause of the disease has not been determined, exposure to heat on the internal organs should be avoided. To enhance the warming effect, you should wrap the animal with a blanket, towel or blanket.
