Alcohol iodine solution contains elemental iodine, which upon contact with skin or mucous membranes turns into iodide and partially evaporates from the surface due to volatility and the presence of ethyl alcohol. It has a rapid bactericidal effect (within 15-60 seconds), as well as an irritating, distracting, and resolving infiltrate effect.

Indications for use: alcohol solution of iodine is used as an antiseptic, distracting, irritating agent for inflammatory and other diseases of the skin and mucous membranes. With myositis and neuralgia, the distracting effect of the drug appears.

Contraindications: hypersensitivity to iodine.

Side effect: the drug, when taken for a long time, can cause symptoms of iodism (urticaria, runny nose, Quincke's edema, acne, lacrimation and salivation).

Pharmacological properties

Externally, treat damaged skin areas. Locally: when treating the surgical field, the skin is wiped twice with a sterile gauze swab soaked in the solution. The total processing time is 4-6 minutes. Pharmacological action of iodine

When using iodine preparations internally, the processes of protein and lipid metabolism are normalized, the drug accumulates in the thyroid gland, affecting its activity, the hormone thyroxine is synthesized, and dissimilation processes are activated. The most popular among such drugs is the biological additive Iodine active. The product, as indicated in the instructions, is an organic iodine compound built into the milk protein molecule. The drug prevents iodine deficiency, since it is an analogue of a natural compound obtained with mother's milk, and has unique properties - if there is a deficiency of the microelement in the body, iodine is absorbed, and if there is excess, it is excreted naturally (without accumulating in the thyroid gland). The use of radioactive iodine is due to the ability of thyroid cells to capture and retain the trace element, which then irradiates and destroys tumor cells. The use of this method of treatment with iodine proceeds without complications and with a high therapeutic effect.

Indications for use

For external use, alcohol solutions of iodine are used as antiseptic, antimicrobial, irritant drugs for the treatment of wounds, injuries, infectious and inflammatory skin lesions, myositis, and neuralgia. Local treatment with iodine is carried out for:

The use of iodine internally is indicated for the prevention and treatment of thyroid diseases, atherosclerosis, tertiary syphilis, chronic lead and mercury poisoning. Radioactive iodine is used for diagnosis of diseases of the thyroid gland, in the treatment of thyrotoxicosis, follicular and papillary thyroid cancer, and for relapses of diseases after surgery.

Directions for use and dosage

When using iodine solution externally, lubricate the affected skin surface with cotton swabs with the required amount of the drug. When applied topically, the medication is usually prescribed for 4-5 procedures for washing the supratonsillar space and lacunae, with an interval of 2-3 days, as well as for treating the nasopharynx and ears for 14-20 days, 2-3 times with the same interval. To treat burns, gauze bandages soaked in the product are applied to the affected areas as needed. Iodine active tablets are recommended to be taken orally, 1 tablet once a day with meals, this dosage is intended for adults and children over 14 years of age.

Radioactive iodine is used only in hospital settings in a specially designated ward for patients who must stop taking any medications 10 days before. Since there are no average dosages, a capsule with radioactive iodine after examinations is prepared within 7 days with a personal dose for the patient. After taking the capsule orally, the patient must be isolated for 5 days (for the safety of others). The therapeutic effect after the procedure is observed after several months.

Contraindications

Treatment with iodine is contraindicated if you are intolerant to it; it is also not recommended to use the drug orally if:

Side effects

When taking iodine preparations orally, increased sweating, diarrhea, tachycardia, insomnia, nervousness, and allergic skin reactions were observed. Special instructions

Avoid getting iodine solution into your eyes. The antiseptic effect of the drug is weakened in the presence of blood, alkaline and acidic environments, pus or fat. The drug in diluted form cannot be stored for a long time; temperatures exceeding 40 °C accelerate the breakdown of active iodine.

Drug interactions

Iodine preparations cannot be used simultaneously with essential oils, ammonia solutions and mercury amidochloride.

Pharmacokinetics
Upon contact with skin, 30% is converted into iodides, and the rest remains in the form of elemental iodine. Partially absorbed from the skin surface. The absorbed portion can enter tissues and organs, being selectively absorbed by the thyroid gland. Iodine is secreted by the kidneys (mainly), intestines, sweat glands and mammary glands.
The absorption of iodine through damaged skin and mucous membranes can be significant.

Indications for use

It is used externally as an antiseptic for infectious and inflammatory skin diseases, for treating the surgical field, and for preventing infection of minor damage to the integrity of the skin.

Side effect

Skin irritation, allergic reactions, including angioedema, urticaria, contact dermatitis, with prolonged use on large wound surfaces - “iodism” (lacrimation, hypersalivation, rhinorrhea, bronchorrhea, swelling of the mucous membranes).
May cause skin hemorrhages or purpuras, fever, arthralgia, lymphadenopathy and eosinophilia.

Overdose

In case of overdose, phenomena of iodism, irritation and burns are possible.
When inhaling concentrated vapors - damage to the upper respiratory tract (burn, laryngo- and bronchospasm); if concentrated solutions get inside - severe burns of the digestive tract; in case of ingestion – development of hemolysis, hemoglobinuria; the lethal dose is about 3 g.
Treatment: gastric lavage with 0.5% sodium thiosulfate solution, intravenous administration of 30% sodium thiosulfate solution - up to 300 ml. In case of a severe skin reaction to iodine, the drug should be immediately removed with 70% ethyl alcohol. It is also recommended to rinse the skin with plenty of water for 15 minutes. In case of accidental ingestion, if the patient is conscious, milk orally every 15 minutes.
Unless the drug is used for the treatment of large open wounds or is used for no more than 10 days, clinically significant systemic absorption is unlikely. Systemic toxicity may result in shock, tachycardia, fever, metabolic acidosis, and renal failure. Death may be caused by circulatory failure, swelling of the epiglottis leading to asphyxia, aspiration pneumonia or pulmonary edema.

Precautions

It is not recommended to use the drug in children under two years of age due to the increased risk of hypothyroidism.
Do not allow the undiluted drug to come into contact with the mucous membranes of the mouth, eyes, vagina and rectum.
It is not recommended for use on deep or puncture wounds, or serious burns, as the use of the drug may cause excessive iodine absorption and tissue irritation.
Do not use the medicine for more than ten days!
It is not recommended to treat large areas of skin with the drug.
The use of the drug may affect the results of studies of thyroid function.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Children

The use of the drug in newborns is contraindicated and the use of the drug in children under two years of age is not recommended due to the high probability of systemic absorption of iodine when applied externally.
Topical use in children can lead to severe skin reactions to iodine, iodism, and transient hypothyroidism.

When the thyroid gland is functioning normally, its cells extract iodine from the blood. At the same time, metabolism proceeds normally - which means that iodine affects the functioning of the whole organism.

It also helps the formation of cells necessary for our body, a kind of cleaners that capture and destroy foreign microorganisms and damaged cells. This element is of paramount importance for the normal growth and development of children and adolescents; participates in the formation of bones and cartilage, in protein synthesis, stimulates mental abilities, improves performance and neutralizes fatigue.

Iodine is also necessary for lipid metabolism and subcutaneous tissue metabolism. It promotes the breakdown of fat and prevents the appearance of cellulite. A normal amount of iodine in the body helps burn fat during diets, keeps you active and gives you energy, and promotes healthy skin, nails and teeth.

How does iodine deficiency manifest itself and the consequences of its deficiency?

Iodine deficiency and deficiency develops in residents of areas where the soil and water are poor in this element. The daily need for iodine depends on the type and physiological state of the person; features of puberty, pregnancy, breastfeeding, etc., which require taking high doses. The World Health Organization has established the following daily iodine requirements for adults and children:

What is iodine tincture used for?

Composition of iodine tincture

Povidone-iodine is a product for local external use in the form of a solution or ointment (a chemically stable complex of polyvinylpyrrolidone and iodine). Used in the treatment of dermatoses with secondary bacterial infection, affecting wounds and trophic ulcers, infections, the drug is effective in painful conditions with bacteria, fungi and viruses. It is applied in a thin layer several times during the day.

How do iodine vapors affect humans?

Inhaling iodine vapor on the seashore, an old therapeutic approach to strengthening the immune system and respiratory system. It is recommended to take walks along the seashore 7-10 days within half an hour to an hour after sunrise. When there is a high concentration of beneficial ions in the air and the effect is most effective.
