Answers to questions:
1. Do I really starch napkins (just like our grandmothers, in a tank, with starch)? No, I don’t use starch (I’m still sane), but 100 years ago I bought a wonderful thing - starch aerosol (like hairspray, only starch). It lasts a long time. Sometimes I starch my husband’s shirt collars. So “not just a napkin”)))
2. Do I really make all this beauty on fabric napkins? No. Almost never. I always use paper ones.
3. And often does this happen to me? No, not often. Only sometimes, when someone comes to visit, in front of whom you want to show off (for example, my husband’s friends. My friends and family already know everything about me)))

When arranging a dinner party or a festive family dinner, it’s a good idea to know how to fold napkins beautifully, because neatly and creatively folded napkins can give a table setting a special charm and charm. For an informal dinner with friends, a bright paper version is ideal, while for special occasions it is preferable to choose linen napkins that harmonize with the tablecloth and dishes. The best solution that fits perfectly into any format is universal white napkins. Of course, you can simply fold them in four and carefully place them next to each device, but just a few simple magical manipulations can create a small miracle, making your table unique and unforgettable.

When setting the table for breakfast, evening tea or a big celebration, it will not be superfluous to know the basic rules of serving and, of course, traditional ways of laying out napkins. It is necessary to remember a few basic rules for setting the table with napkins:

  • Contrary to popular belief, both linen and paper napkins should be present on the festive table. Imagine that the main course is served with poultry or fish, which is partially eaten with your hands. A linen napkin will instantly become covered with greasy stains and will not only lose its aesthetic appearance, but will also become superfluous on the holiday table. Your guest will be embarrassed to look for the sink. Setting a festive table means napkin holders are freely available.

Table setting with linen and paper napkins

  • Linen napkins are made from linen or cotton. A small amount of synthetics is allowed so that the napkin, after folding, does not look wrinkled. Do not use silk, viscose and other slippery, non-absorbent materials.
  • If the table setting involves a portion plate, then the napkin is placed on it, or between the forks and knives. If such a plate is not provided, then a napkin is placed in its place. A separate glass or wine glass under a figuratively folded napkin is allowed.

  • When folding napkins for a holiday table, remember that they should unfold easily and not look too wrinkled, so iron-on shapes are used for decorative napkins that decorate the table.
  • It is unacceptable to fold napkins with dirty or wet hands. It doesn't look appetizing and will spoil the mood of the guests.
  • After washing, linen napkins should be starched with regular starch, which dissolves in water. Aerosol starch will not give them the proper density. It is advisable to iron napkins while they are still damp, and dry napkins must be moistened before ironing.
  • And one last piece of advice. Before folding linen, and especially paper napkins, practice! Otherwise, you can start washing, ironing or running to the store for new napkins right before the celebration.

It's funny, but once upon a time thin, low-fat pancakes like lavash were actually used as napkins. For the same purpose, fig leaves, rice paper, clothing sleeves, and even the hair of court boys were used at different times.

The first fabric napkins appeared among the ancient Romans. Large rectangular cloths protected the bed from contamination (the patricians ate their meals lying down), and they also blotted their lips and hands.

In Russia, the nobility was encouraged to use these hygiene products by the decree of Peter the Great; since then it was forbidden to wipe with a sleeve or tablecloth. The paper napkins familiar to us were patented in the 19th century, and their in-line production began only in the 70s of the last century.

Today, when setting a banquet table, cloth and paper napkins are used. The former are designed to protect clothes from contamination; wiping oily hands or lips with them is now not accepted. Although it is correct to blot your lips with a cloth after drinking or touch it with slightly dirty fingers.

To create a festive mood and surprise guests, square napkins can be wrapped and twirled into the most incredible shapes. The fabric needs to be starched after washing - this way it holds its shape better.

Impressive compositions are made in napkin holders and from ordinary paper products, cutlery is wrapped in them, and in a cafe or restaurant many young people strive to twist a napkin rose for their lady.

White lilies symbolize purity and innocence, which is why they are often given as wedding gifts. But - also for mourning days, since these flowers also mean life “on the other side” and atonement for sins.

Accordingly, lily napkins will be appropriate on both the festive and funeral tables. If there is a Lily among your family and friends, decorate the table on her holiday with her namesake flowers.

Crown

The folding method is close to the lily. Suitable for any event, just choose colors in the appropriate style. By the way, if you have napkins that match the tablecloth, try to make them from a thinner material - it will look better.

The last two schemes use paper napkins from which to roll up a bag and an envelope for a spoon, fork and knife.

A table without fabric napkins is suitable for a buffet celebration or informal meetings in a close circle.

Beautiful table decoration helps to lift your spirits and create a special atmosphere. This is a very simple piece that you can even make yourself. A table decorated with elegantly laid out napkin figures will look especially solemn. If you don’t know how to beautifully fold paper napkins on a holiday table, then the following information will be useful to you.

The hostess's table can be decorated with different napkins. The simplest and most affordable option is, of course, paper products. Such napkins are very cheap, so you don’t have to worry about ruining something while experimenting with table decoration.

You can even make figures from paper napkins together with your children. This is a fun family activity that will leave you not only in high spirits, but also with beautiful table decor.

You can also try working with thicker two-layer napkins. This material is familiar to those who do decoupage. Surprisingly, creative girls and women buy two-layer napkins even more often than those who use them for their intended purpose. But it is quite possible to set the table with such bright and beautiful napkins.

But no napkins can replace towels. Previously, according to all the rules of etiquette, they were used when setting the table. And now in good restaurants they are used for serving. Linen napkins are laid out next to the cutlery. Paper ones are placed in a beautiful glass in the center of the table. Thus, guests have the opportunity to protect their festive outfit with a beautiful linen towel, and remove dirt with an ordinary cheap napkin.

You can also use linen towels at home. If you roll them beautifully, they will look even more beautiful and elegant.

Even without any special skills, you can decorate your holiday table with a rose or lily laid out from a thick linen napkin. In addition, such decorative items can be safely used not just once, but several times.

Before folding figures from napkins, it would be useful to familiarize yourself with the simple rules of table setting.

In addition to the napkins, which are laid out next to the cutlery of each participant in the meal, there should also be “common” napkins on the table in a special glass or on a plate. Depending on how you store them, it is worth choosing a more convenient folding method. For example, if you are laying out napkins on a plate, you can fold them into hearts or Christmas trees, and place flowers made from linen towels in a glass.

The choice of the color of the napkin and the print that decorates it depends on the theme of the party and the age of the guests. For example, if you are setting the table for children and are going to have a children's party at home, then bright colorful napkins will suit you. They can even be decorated with prints of your favorite cartoon characters or characters from fairy tales.

When setting a table for adults, you can get by with simpler decorations in pastel colors. Napkins in pink, light blue or pistachio colors will be an excellent decoration for your holiday table.

Housewives often want to decorate everything in the same color scheme. If you like this idea, then decide on one main color and one or two additional tones. As a rule, in this case they are in harmony with the color of the dishes or tablecloth.

Another useful tip for housewives - choose schemes, soberly assessing your abilities and skills. For those who have not been involved in creativity, the simplest schemes are suitable. They are the easiest to repeat, which means you will succeed the first time. And your guests won’t have to think about how to unfold this work of art more accurately. If you have at least a little experience, then you can try to take on something more difficult. Fortunately, there are plenty of schemes of varying complexity.

Simple circuits

Step-by-step instructions with a detailed explanation of each stage allow you to understand the circuits. Here are some examples of simple patterns that you can repeat yourself and teach them to your children, who will happily help you decorate the table.

Fan

One of the frequently used patterns is a fan. It’s not at all difficult to make such a decoration for your table, so similar figures can be seen on the holiday table.

In order to get a beautiful colored fan, you only need a couple of minutes of free time and a simple paper napkin. It doesn't matter what size workpiece you take.

First of all, you will need to lay out the napkin. If there is some kind of pattern on it, then the napkin should be placed with the picture down. If there is no drawing on the paper, then it does not matter. The napkin needs to be folded in half. Then, moving from right to left, fold it like an accordion. The first fold bends down. After you've fanned the napkin, place it on the table next to your plate. If you wish, you can complement the composition with a paper rose or some other decorative elements.

Christmas tree

On the New Year's table there is room for all sorts of variations on the theme of the Christmas tree. These can be not only real coniferous branches or salads laid out in the form of a bright New Year's tree, but also napkins.

For this preparation you will need a napkin folded into four times. Naturally, it is better to take the color of the workpiece “Christmas tree” - green, pistachio, emerald, and so on. It must definitely exfoliate, without this you won’t succeed.

Bend the corners of the layered napkin so that there is a distance of at least one centimeter between them. After you have folded all the corners, turn the napkin over and fold it on both sides so that you get a shape similar to a Christmas tree. The corners need to be bent upward, hiding each subsequent one under the previous layer.

When the figurine is ready, you can simply place it next to the plate or further decorate it. There are many interesting sparkles or beads that can be scattered across the surface of the napkin or even glued to it.

Heart

Another option is a heart-shaped figurine. This decoration is suitable for romantic people who want to please their soulmate. In addition, such figures will look great on a festive table for Valentine's Day.

To decorate the holiday table you will need simple rectangular napkins. It is better to choose red or pink, because they are most often associated with something romantic.

First of all, lay out the thin paper product and fold it in half into a kind of triangle. Its right corner should be bent closer to the center. The same must be repeated with the right one. After you have made such a blank, turn the napkin over. Now you need to bend the top corner to the center again. Move the remaining two apart.

In fact, you already have a blank that resembles a heart. But to make it look more natural and beautiful, bend the sharp upper corners inward - the edges will be more round. Now you can turn the heart over and use it to decorate the holiday table.

8 photos

There can be one or several hearts next to the plate. It all depends on how much time you are willing to spend on decorating the table. Both plain hearts and hearts made in different colors look beautiful: pink, beige, white, red.

For those who want to work not with simple paper napkins, but with full-fledged linen towels, it will be much easier. Even just by rolling it and folding the edges, you can already get something that looks like a beautiful rose that deserves a place on the holiday table.

There are many interesting and simple designs that are enough to regularly delight your loved ones and friends with original table decorations. Use them, and you won’t have to spend extra money on decor, because handmade decorations look much more beautiful.
