Setting up a router: detailed instructions for dummies. How to connect your computer to Wi-Fi? Installing a Wi-Fi adapter

Wi-Fi provides fast wireless Internet access without being tied to wires and a modem. You only need a device with a Wi-Fi module - using it, several devices can connect to the network at once.

To properly configure the router you do not need special education

Buying and setting up a router will take a little time and does not require special knowledge. To consider in detail all stages of connection, we will use the settings for TP-Link brand models, the most popular among a large number of users.

Before you move on to installing Wi-Fi, you need to figure out how to install your router and make sure it's working properly.

How to connect a Wi-Fi router? First, we choose a place for it - the main thing is that it does not stand on the table where the computer is located or on the system unit, since in such cases interference in work often occurs. Therefore, we move it a little away from other equipment and place it closer to the center of the house so that the waves cover as much area as possible.

To find out how much the router covers the room, after installation, download special applications - they will make the device work as efficiently as possible.

On the back of the router there are the following connectors (in the basic version):

  • 4 Lan - port for connecting to a PC. A maximum of 4 computers can be connected to one device at the same time. We insert the cable into one of the ports, and connect the other part to the connector on the back of the system unit.
  • A cord with an Internet connection is installed in the WAN cable socket.
  • We plug the power cable into the outlet.

Here you will also see a reboot and on/off button - their functions are clear. When you have sorted out the wires and inserted them where needed, an icon about a new connection will appear at the bottom of the desktop. Now we need to find out if your PC has installed the router correctly.

Device Manager - setting up the operation of a computer with a router

How to enter the router settings and check whether the computer correctly recognized the equipment. We use the Control Panel, stop at the chapter Network Connections - if you have Windows XP, in Windows Vista/7/8 this section is designated “Network and Control”, “Network and Sharing Center”.

Current connections will appear here - select “Local Area Connection” and look at the properties. You will now see a list of components where you stop at “TCP/IP Internet Protocol”. Here we check how the checkboxes are marked:

  • Typically, lines are highlighted that talk about automatically obtaining an IP address and DNS server.
  • For some suppliers, information is entered manually, so you will see filled-in lines. Check them with the data in the contract or instructions for the device, enter the correct numbers if they do not match.

The next step is to move on to how to enter the router settings.

Browser and entering parameters

The router is configured using a browser.

Enter your IP address in the address bar. In most cases, this is the combination 192.168.1.1 - the standard version of the address, which, however, differs for some Internet service providers. After pressing Enter, you will see the Wi-Fi router settings. If this does not happen, then the IP address is not suitable and you need to enter other numbers.

How to find out the IP address:

  • In documents or on the back of the router.
  • If, when entering the properties of “Local Area Network Connections”, the IP address field was previously filled in and was not set to automatic detection, copy it.
  • Try checking other addresses - the last two values may look like 0.1, 0.2, or 1.2.
  • Enter cmd in the command line (it opens through Start), and then ping 168.x.1, and you will be shown all the device parameters.

After entering the IP, a form for entering your login and password appears in front of you. We fill both lines here with the word admin, after which the parameters of the router itself will appear directly.

Reflashing equipment

First of all, setting up a router begins with flashing it to the current version - after the release of each model, a lot of time passes, during which improvements are made and errors are corrected. Therefore, installing the most current version will avoid operational problems.

You can get it on the manufacturer's website. Download the file and go to the settings again (you know how to enter the router settings through a browser) in the System Tools, subsection Firmware Upgrade. Here we select “Browse...”, upload the file and after clicking Upgrade the update will begin.

Clarification: The firmware is optional, so you can do without it - it will not interfere with the operation of the device.

Setting up an Internet connection

After rebooting the Wi-Fi equipment (it will happen automatically), we proceed to setting the parameters for accessing the World Wide Web. In the System Tools section, select the Password tab and enter new data to enter the settings at your discretion.

Now in the Network section we stop at the WAN graph, where we select the type of connection provided by the provider. Mostly this is a dynamic IP (Dynamic), but in some cases this option is not correct.

How to find out your connection type?

It is listed in the documents along with the rest of the data for setting up a Wi-Fi router. If they are missing, find them on the website of your Internet service provider or contact a specialist by phone.

Note: if you need a different type of connection (not dynamic), enter additional information yourself in the fields located in this form after selecting the desired parameter.

The remaining fields will be filled in automatically when you select the Dynamic IP option.

Let's move on to the Wireless section. We put a checkmark next to Enable (if there is such a line), in the Wireless Network Name or SSID we come up with a name for the connection that will be seen by everyone who wants to use Wi-Fi. Below there may be a tab for selecting your country - indicate it, save the changes made and move on to the next stage of our setup.

Wireless Security - you should take filling out this part of the parameters seriously, because here you can secure your network from unauthorized access. Select WPA/WPA2 and set a password in the PSK Password field - without it no one will be able to establish a connection with your Wi-Fi.

Additionally: MAC Address and copying it

Sometimes providers tie a Wi-Fi access point to the PC's network card. This equipment has a personal MAC code, which we copy into the router settings - to do this, click the “Clone MAC - Code” button.

Where can I find it? Depending on the manufacturer, the address may be located in different sections, mainly in Wireless. In the most common TP-Link models, the MAC address is located in the Network folder; to copy it, you need to select a special column.

The Wi-Fi router setup has been successfully completed. Confirm the reboot - the router will prompt you to do it, then all the changes made will take effect.

Wireless access is convenient, practical, it’s easy to install such Internet, it just takes a little time and a little effort. Now you know how to go into the router settings and fill out all the necessary fields to get quick access no matter what part of the room you are in, and use the Internet on any device that supports this technology.

According to my observations, few of those who were able to independently connect wifi router, if there is wired internet, knew how to do it RIGHT. That is, use it to set up a wireless network and combine different devices into it. As a result, they subsequently encounter difficulties that could have been solved at the local network design stage.

How to connect a wifi router?

Before we begin the step-by-step description of connecting a Wi-Fi router, I want to draw your attention to one point.

To create a full-fledged local wireless network, you need to buy a device such as a ROUTER, or also called a ROUTER.

The fact is that there are a lot of devices similar in appearance and functionality for various purposes. For example, out of ignorance it is easy to confuse it with a wired router without WiFi, which also distributes the Internet signal to devices. But only with the help of cables - it does not have an antenna.

Another device similar in appearance is an access point. In general, her tasks are slightly different from ours. A characteristic difference between a router and an access point is the presence of several outlets for network cables. While at the point there is usually only one.

The point of connecting a router is that it is now it, and not your PC, that will connect to the Internet via cable. To do this, all the necessary parameters required to connect to the provider, which were once applied on your desktop computer, will now be specified in the router settings. And all other devices will already receive Internet via wifi from it and according to the rules that will be specified in it.

For clarity, look at the diagram:

In order to connect a router at home and set up a Wi-Fi network, I used a dozen models from completely different manufacturers. I can say with confidence that in terms of the actual configuration of the WiFi router and connection to the provider, the difference between them lies only in the details of the graphic design of the admin panel. Therefore, having mastered the principle once on one model, you can apply them to others. Today, as an example, I will illustrate with screenshots from two routers - TrendNet TEW-632BRP and ASUS WL-520GC.

How to connect a router to the Internet via DHCP?

The first setting we will look at is setting up a DHCP server.
If previously there was only one computer and it alone received an IP address from the provider, then we can connect many computers and gadgets to the router. This means that it is the router, instead of the computer, that will “communicate” with the provider’s equipment. And within the framework of our home network between these devices, it will itself assign an internal IP address to each computer, laptop, phone, TV and everything else.

Procedure:

  1. After connecting to the power supply, first of all you need to configure the router to communicate with the computer. To do this, insert the Internet cable into the WAN slot on the device. And we connect the other cable, with two plugs, which most likely came with the device, at one end to the computer’s network card. Where there used to be an internet cable. Others - in any of the LAN1, LAN2, LAN3 or LAN4 slots of the router.

I also want to note that it is better to connect the router to the network through an uninterruptible power supply. I had an unpleasant experience when a good Netgear device froze due to a power surge. It simply began broadcasting wifi not at 100, but at 2 meters. Of course, I had to buy a new one.

  2. Next, take the installation disk that came with the router. And we start installing drivers and software.
  3. After this, we need to configure the computer to work with the router. Now our network card is configured to connect directly to the Internet through the provider. This means that perhaps the control panel contains some data that is important for us to save and use later when working with the router. To do this, go to the settings of the TCP/IP v.4 protocol as shown in the diagram:

For Windows XP: “Start > Control Panel > Switch to Classic View > Network Connections.”

In Windows 7: “Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Manage network connections > Change adapter settings.”

In the screenshot, I go to the “Wireless Connection” settings, but you don’t have it yet, and since we connected the computer to the router with a cable, you need to select the “Local Area Connection” item:

If you have something indicated here, then write down this data on a piece of paper. This is especially true for those who have lost their contract for the provision of services and do not know the data for connecting to the World Wide Web. For a certain type of connection, which will be discussed below, this may be useful. After this, here, in the network connection settings on your computer, you need to set the IP, gateway and DNS to automatic. We will already enter these parameters in the wireless router itself.

  4. After that, go to the address “http://192.168.1.1”. Typically, configurations with the router occur here, if they did not have to be done at the software installation stage. But look in the instructions for the device to see which way to go to the router’s control panel. Since the default preset IP on different models may differ. Another popular place for placing brief instructions is a sticker on the bottom of the device. Look there too. If there are no instructions in the instructions, or it is lost, then go to the Control Panel, as I already described above. Only after right-clicking on “Local Area Connection” in the window that appears, click the “Details” button. In the window that opens, look for IPv4 Default Gateway - this is the IP address of the router.

  5. Now, finally, go to the address indicated there through the browser (http://IP ADDRESS OF YOUR ROUTER). And we find the DHCP Server item in the menu (in Trendnet it is combined with WAN) and set the range of values for possible IP addresses of devices within your local network. For me it was like this: Start IP - 192.168.10.101, End IP 192.168.10.200. And of course, opposite the DHCP Server item there should be an Enabled parameter. Domain Name or Host Name is the name of the future home wifi network. Let me make a reservation right away that the screenshots below were taken from my devices, which are already working or have been working for several years. Their interface is in English, so it would be difficult for a domestic beginner to figure out what’s what without help - I hope these pictures will help you. Most modern firmware and software are already in Russified form, so it will be even easier to understand.

This is what it looked like on Trendnet (highlighted in red):

And here it is in ASUS:

Setting up a computer connection to the router via LAN

Now we will set the parameters for our wifi network at home - IP and router mask. For Trendnet this is the same item (see Figure 1, highlighted in green), for Asus - the WAN & LAN section - at the very bottom of the settings page. In the first case I set IP 192.168.10.1, in the second - 192.168.1.1. This is the address within the local network at which we can access the admin panel through a browser. And through which computers will access the Internet. Mask - default, 255.255.255.0

Connecting a WiFi router to the Internet via the WAN port

These were all the flowers, now the most interesting part is setting up the external connection of the router to the Internet.
There are several types depending on the provider settings. This happens in the WAN menu.

There are several other options for connecting to the provider’s equipment, but I didn’t come across them. Therefore, I will not talk about them for now.

How to encrypt your WiFi connection

If you did everything correctly and saved all the settings, then all devices that support wifi should now see the new network with the name you specified. However, the question of how to connect wifi at home is not yet closed. The home wifi network turned out to be open, that is, anyone can use your Internet access for free. In order to ruin everyone and make the wifi network at home accessible only to its owner, you need to protect the wireless network.

There are several methods, I have used two in my practice: WPE (or Shared Key) and WPA. The latter is more reliable, so I'll consider it. Go to security settings. In Trendnet this is the “Security” menu item, in Asus it is “Wireless > Interface”.

Select WPE or WPA Personal (PSK, TKIP) from the menu and set a password for authorization - from 7 to 64 characters. And we save. I show you how it was for me:

Well, now to access the Internet through your router, you need to enter a password. The final touch remains - so that there are no problems with connecting various devices to the router and with the operation of programs, we will manually set the DNS server. Setting this parameter is located in the same place where you entered the parameters for connecting to the Internet. We activate the function of manually assigning DNS servers and enter the IP from Google there:

  • DNS-Primary (or DNS Server 1):8.8.8.8
  • DNS-Secondary (or DNS Server 2): 8.8.4.4

You can also specify one of the Yandex servers (for example 77.88.8.8).

As you can see, connecting wifi through a router and making a wifi network at home is quite easy. I hope everything works out for you too!

Now for the traditional video for dessert on connecting a router, which will tell you even more clearly about the typical settings for working with the network.

    overall rating:

Windows crashed on the laptop. I tried to do it myself and almost lost all the photos. But there is a photo of the child from birth!!! My wife would kill me! I called Compolife and explained the situation. In general, they said not to touch anything else and sent a service engineer. An hour later he arrived and spent another 3 hours restoring all the photos. I WAS ABLE TO SAVE EVERYTHING! Well, I installed a new seven later with programs. I thought it would be expensive, although I didn’t mind spending any money for the photos, but in the end it turned out to be less than I expected. If anything happens now I will only contact them.

I didn’t expect that the guys would cope in one day, and I would already be able to join my favorite classmates. We installed the router and configured it. Now I can walk around the entire apartment with a tablet. Thank you! I'll give it four so you have something else to strive for.

Installing a wifi router - one for everyone and everything for one!

The modern age of information technology dictates its own conditions: the number of computers per capita is constantly growing. More and more people prefer computer technology: it is convenient and sometimes necessary. Many families in Moscow have several computers at once. This can be a stationary personal computer, a laptop or netbook, a tablet, a communicator or a mobile phone with great functionality.

So, there are several computers in the family and everyone needs access to the Internet. But, as a rule, only one Internet connection from the provider is provided to one apartment or private house.

In order for several computers to connect to it at once, you need to install a wifi router. This is much more convenient than using one channel, connecting a modem or network cable to different computers in turn. In addition, not all providers allow the use of their channel with different computers.

Installing a router at home, what is the benefit?

    • No extra wires.
    • High data transfer speed (up to 900 Mb/s).
    • Quickly add new devices to the network.
    • Ability to connect to the Internet all devices with a Wi-Fi module.
    • The ability to use the Internet anywhere in your apartment or office.

The specialists of our computer assistance service at home will install a router for any Internet provider in Moscow and the Moscow region: Beeline, Akado, Rostelecom, NetByNet and other Internet providers.

Installing a wifi router is the solution to many problems!

Correctly installing a Wi-Fi router is not an easy task. There are many factors to consider. These are the features of the network protocols of your Internet provider, the type of communication channel and its frequency, and the types of devices connected to the network. It is very important to correctly select and configure network encryption, protection against unauthorized access, and much more.

The site’s engineers will be able to help you with any questions related to installing wifi at home or in an apartment. Believe me, the price of the service will not shock you. The most popular services are installation of d link dir 300, d link dir 615 routers, asus rt g32, asus rt n10 and n12 routers, zyxel keenetic giga.

Installing wifi at home, in an apartment or office is our job!

Using Wi-Fi at home is very convenient. This allows you to get rid of wires, which cause a lot of inconvenience, and open access to the Internet for any portable devices that support a Wi-Fi connection. For the average user, connecting wifi is the main task that must be completed to use the Internet wirelessly. The correct selection and configuration of equipment will allow you to get a stable high-speed Wi-Fi connection and enjoy access to the Internet not only in your home, but also outside it. The connection range, depending on the model, can be in the range of 50-100 meters or more.

Choosing a Wi-Fi router

In order to set up a Wi-Fi connection at home after installing cable Internet, you need to buy a router. But how to choose and configure the router correctly?

First you need to decide on the type of router. There are models for connecting the Internet via an ADSL telephone line and via cable Internet via a dedicated Ethernet line. The latter are the most common, because ADSL is now quite rare.

There are various types of routers on sale; when choosing a model, you should take into account such characteristics as data transfer speed, signal quality, and comfort during operation. Among the models widely used for home use, one of the most common is the D-Link DIR-620, which operates according to the 802.11n standard. This model is equipped with two antennas, which allows for good Wi-Fi quality. Installation and configuration of routers of various models intended for domestic use are almost the same, therefore, once you understand the D-Link DIR-620, you can install any other models. Some nuances in setting parameters may vary depending on which firmware version is installed, even on exactly the same models.

Installing and configuring the router

The first thing you need to do is connect an internet cable to the router and turn it on to the network. The cable is connected via the Ethernet port, then you need to connect a laptop or computer to the router via a network cable. This is done to set up a Wi-Fi connection, after which the use of wires will no longer be needed for devices that support a Wi-Fi connection, and you will be able to use the Internet not only from a computer, but also from a smartphone and other devices.

In order to go into the settings of the D-Link DIR-620 router, you need to enter the following IP address in your browser: http://192.168.0.1. If you log in successfully, a window will appear on the screen asking you to enter your login and password. For routers of this model, the default login and password is the word admin. After entering, the main router settings menu will open.

The next step is to go to the “Network” sections and then to the Wan connection. In the window that appears, you will need to check the boxes automatically, where available, and also select the IPoE connection type, and then save the settings.

The next step is setting up a Wi-Fi connection, which can be done in the corresponding subsection. There you will need to check the box to enable the wireless connection, select the maximum number of connected users and select the automatic channel. To protect the connection from third-party users, you need to go to the “Security” section and set WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK mixed in network authentication, after which a field will appear in which you can enter a password to connect to your access point.

In the WAN settings you will also need to specify your data from the provider, namely the login and password for connecting to the Internet. As a result, you can always connect to the router via Wi-Fi without authorization, which is much faster and easier.

Connection settings on your computer

The computer will recognize the connected router only if the network is configured correctly; otherwise, you will not be able to enter the router’s settings after connecting it to the computer. The device will be visible if it is on the same network as the computer. Therefore, you will need to configure the IP network, address and subnet mask. In the IP address field you need to enter 192.168.1.10. Subnet mask 255.255.255.0. These parameters will need to be entered in the TCP/IP properties on the computer.

Useful tips for choosing a router and settings

When buying a router, it is best to give preference to models with not one, but several antennas. Preferably, they should be removable, which will allow replacement in case of breakdown. Models with removable antennas are usually more expensive, but if they break down, you can always buy them separately and install them.

If, after connecting and setting up the connection, the signal is unstable, then you need to try to place the router in another place so that there are as few obstacles as possible in the signal path, then its range will increase significantly, as will the speed of the Wi-Fi connection.

When creating a password, you should not limit yourself to short and simple options, because they can easily be hacked and other users can use your Internet. The optimal password length should be 8-10 characters, including numbers and capital letters.

When choosing a Wi-Fi router, you can look for reviews about it from users who already use a specific model. From them you can understand the strengths and weaknesses of each of the options under consideration.

It is advisable that the router be updated to the latest firmware version. You can usually download it from the website of the manufacturer of the selected router. This will allow you to achieve higher connection speeds and stability. When the router is running, various problems may arise with the connection and connection speed; in order to get rid of most of them, you just need to turn off the router for a few minutes and then turn it on again. You can reset the settings to factory defaults using a regular needle, which you need to press into a special hole and hold for a few seconds. This is usually done if you need to reconfigure the router or you have forgotten the password to enter the settings menu.

Wireless Wi-Fi networks are a very convenient invention. In such a network, home computers can share a common Internet connection, exchange information, play online multiplayer games, and print documents on a shared network printer without using a wired connection for each network participant, provided that it has a WiFi radio module. This allows you to get rid of the need to install network cables around the house and not be tied to a specific place of work where the cable is routed. You can even go out into the garden at home and work in the fresh air within the range of the WiFi network.

As the questions to our previous article showed, many issues of the practical implementation of a wireless network remained unclear for many users. Therefore, it was decided to write the second part of the article on how to install wifi at home with an emphasis on the technical implementation of a wireless network.

Organizing a WiFi network at home always begins with determining the type of Internet connection used. The most popular connection options currently are:

  1. Wired high-speed connection primarily based on FTTb technology. With this type of connection, a twisted pair cable comes into the house or apartment and is connected to the 8-pin RJ-45 connector of the computer.
  2. Wired high-speed network connection based on ADSL technology. For this connection, a telephone wire is used as a transmission channel and the modem is connected to a telephone socket, and a wire with a 4-pin RJ-12 “telephone” connector comes to the modem itself.
  3. In cases where there is no possibility of connecting to wired unlimited Internet, wireless connection technologies using LTE technology from leading cellular operators are used. For many, the abbreviation may not mean anything, so let us clarify that we mean the third generation of mobile communications with increased data transfer speeds - 3G networks. When using this connection, a 3G modem is inserted into one of the computer’s USB ports, which in appearance resembles a flash drive and provides a connection to the Internet.
Decide which of the considered groups your connection belongs to. This will determine the type of equipment you will need to purchase to install a WiFi network at home.

For the first type of connection, this will be the largest group of routers such as D-Link DIR 320, Asus WL-520GC/GU, Zyxel Keenetic.

For the second type of ADSL connection, modems with a WiFi module such as D-Link DSL-2640U, Acorp Sprinter@ADSL W422G, TrendNet TEW-658BRM.

For the third type, the choice of devices is smaller, but you can also choose something suitable. For example, routers Zyxel Keenetic 4G, TrendNet TEW-655BR3G, Netgear WNDR4300.

I would like to say that the indicated models are not recommended, but are given only to make it easier to navigate with the necessary equipment. Most often, certain devices can be recommended by the provider whose Internet connection services you use.

After the device is purchased to run a WiFi network at home, it will need to be configured. To do this, connect an Ethernet cable to the WAN connector of the router, a telephone cable to the ADSL modem, and a corresponding wireless modem to the 4G USB connector of the router and begin setting up the device.

The setup is carried out through the so-called web interface by connecting the computer to the device with an Ethernet cable. Connect one end of the cable with an 8-pin connector to the network card of your laptop or computer, and the other end to any of the LAN ports of the router or modem. After that, go to the router settings by typing the address 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 in the address bar of any browser and pressing the Enter key on the keyboard. The exact address of the settings (web interface) must be indicated in the documentation for the device.

You can enter the settings using your login and password. They are also indicated in the documentation or on a sticker on the bottom cover of the device. The general setting principle is as follows:

  1. First, the current Internet connection is configured in the “Internet connection” (WAN) section. You can know that the connection has been successfully established by the working Internet and opening sites on the computer connected by wire to the device.
  2. Once an Internet connection is established, a wireless network is configured that will “distribute” the current Internet connection to all home computers and devices via WiFi. To do this, go to the “Wireless Network” section, select WPA/WPA2 data encryption type, assign a network access key and give the name of the future network (SSID), by which it will be detected by computers within its range.
  3. Restart the router and disconnect the network cable that connects it to the computer. Try to find the created wireless network on your computer and connect to it by entering the access key.
The entire setup process is described in more detail in our previous article about houses.

If, after trying to connect, no error message is displayed, and a wireless network activity indicator appears on the computer and all sites open in the browser, then the WiFi installation at home was successful. Otherwise, check your device settings again.
