Mothers often have to treat a runny nose in infants and preschool children. When prescribing drops, pediatricians focus on the drug "Sialor". Previously, they were known under the name "Protargol", prepared in a pharmacy, had a short storage time. Modern "Sialor" has a long shelf life and is effective for a runny nose in infants. It has a vasoconstrictive effect, facilitates nasal breathing.

Characteristics of the drug "Sialor"

Antiseptic nasal drops "Sialor" are produced by the pharmaceutical company Renewal (Russia). Their active ingredient is protargol (silver proteinate). It has an astringent effect, prevents the growth of bacteria and their penetration into the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity. As a silver proteinate stabilizer, polyvinyl-N-pyrrolidone (an auxiliary component) was introduced into the preparation.

Before using Sialor, it is important for mom to familiarize herself with contraindications and dosage. Its main advantages include:

  • affordable price;
  • long shelf life (compared to Protargol);
  • ease of use;
  • a wide range of applications;

Indications for use

Dear reader!

This article talks about typical ways to solve your questions, but each case is unique! If you want to know how to solve your particular problem - ask your question. It's fast and free!

"Sialor" is a local disinfectant drug that is not addictive and does not disturb the blood circulation of the nasal mucosa. Getting on them, the drug decomposes into positively charged silver ions. They destroy a number of bacteria and fungi that provoke diseases of the nasopharynx, in particular - rhinitis and sinusitis.

Sialor is prescribed for prolonged runny nose, rhinitis or sinusitis with the addition of a bacterial infection

The drug is active against:

  • moraxell;
  • hemophilic rods;
  • strains of streptococci;
  • other microorganisms, the origin of which is not of a viral nature (the drug is powerless against viruses).

Indications for the use of "Sialor":

  • adenoids;
  • allergic and vasomotor rhinitis;
  • purulent runny nose (green snot);
  • dryness of the nasal mucosa due to chronic diseases;
  • hygienic washing of the nose in infants and older children;
  • washing of paranasal sinuses before and after surgical interventions.

Sialor drops are used for babies, and the spray is used for older children and adults.

Side effects and contraindications

Side effects during the use of "Sialor" appear when the dosage is exceeded and the instructions are violated.

They are expressed in dryness and burning of the mucous membranes, redness of the eyes, headache, frequent sneezing (not the fault of a cold). Allergic edema and anaphylactic shock are very rarely possible, so when using drops for the first time, it is important to carefully monitor the child.

A mini-test will allow you to check the child's reaction to the drug. Before dripping the drug into the nose, you should test its effect on the forearm. If after applying a few drops on the forearm for 15 minutes no reaction followed, children's "Sialor" can be used.

The annotation states that individual intolerance (allergy to components), pregnancy and lactation become contraindications to the appointment of drops. However, in most Western countries, drugs based on protargol are banned from use due to the belief in their toxicity.

In case of an overdose, Sialor can cause a number of side effects.

Indeed, with uncontrolled intake, argyrosis may occur - a condition caused by prolonged deposition of silver ions in tissues and organs. In case of an overdose, irreversible pigmentation of the skin and mucous membranes in gray and bluish tones occurs. So the drug should be used very carefully.

The disadvantages of drops, patients include staining of the mucous membranes after instillation, leakage from the nose and soiling of clothes. When using, it is better to wear a bib or take a napkin.

Instructions for use of the drug

Drops prepared according to the instructions are odorless. They are similar in color and consistency to iodine, but do not contain this trace element. Not all children like the instillation process, because when they drain down the mucous membrane into the throat, they cause a bitter taste. Before dripping the baby's nose, it should be cleaned of snot and crusts, rinsed with any preparation based on sea water or saline.

Instructions for using drops do not provide information about age restrictions. However, WHO does not recommend (but does not prohibit) the use of drops up to 5 years.

Russian pediatricians of the "old school" can prescribe a solution of silver proteinate even to infants up to a year old. Younger specialists treat their use with caution, more often they select analogues for children under 3 years old.

According to the instructions, the drug is used three times a day in a volume of up to 3 drops (one or two irrigations in each nostril). The maximum application time is a week, after which they take a break of at least a month. Before using drops, it is important to consult a pediatrician. He will determine whether it is necessary to take the drug, how much time and at what dosage to drip, will recommend analogues.

You can instill the drug in two ways:

  • Infants should prepare a 1% solution and instill three times a day. For children older than 5 years, the doctor may recommend a two percent solution. To drip, the child should be laid on the back and use a pipette. The remaining drops are best sucked out with an aspirator.
  • Some parents are afraid that the solution will get into the stomach or neck. They are advised to lubricate the nasal passages with a cotton swab dipped in the medicine. To do this, cotton wool should be twisted into a long dense bundle and dipped in a solution. During the procedure, you should act carefully so as not to damage the delicate nasal mucosa. For a one-year-old child, a swab with drops is placed shallowly, gently lubricating the nasal cavity. Sometimes a child may sneeze several times in a row, feeling a tingle in the nose.

Terms and conditions of storage

Protargol shows a therapeutic effect for a short time period. For this reason, it is important to properly dilute the drug so as not to lose the therapeutic effect:

  • in unopened form, a tablet with the main substance is stored for 24 months;
  • after opening the tablet should be diluted in an ampoule of water for an hour;
  • prepared drops are used for a month, then the drug loses its properties and becomes useless.

The shelf life of the finished solution of Sialor is 30 days

So that the mother does not forget the date when the drug was diluted, she is entered in a specially marked place on the bottle. After this time, the drops can be discarded and diluted with new ones if necessary. Store the finished solution should be in a temperature range of 2 to 8 degrees in a dark place inaccessible to children.

If a child accidentally finds and drinks Sialor, Dr. Komarovsky advises to wash the stomach on his own or contact a doctor. You can not leave the situation unattended, because an excess of silver will be deposited in the tissues and cells, provoke argyria.

Accidental contact with the eye is not dangerous (this bactericide is sometimes used in the treatment of conjunctivitis). However, burning is possible, the color of the sclera is brown, which raises the suspicion of inflammation. To return everything back to normal, you should gently rinse your eyes with cool water.

How to replace "Sialor"?

"Sialor" and "Protargol" are the only drugs based on the active - protargol, which offers the pharmaceutical market. The cost of packaging with a bottle and a tablet for preparing a two percent solution is about 260 rubles.

Miramistin is an indirect analogue, but has a disinfecting effect similar to Sialor

A number of drugs have a similar disinfecting effect and therapeutic effect against green snot. The table shows the popular cheap analogues of "Sialor":

Drops "Sialor" should not be confused with the drug "Sialor Reno", similar in name. The latter has a completely different composition based on oxymetazoline and has a vasoconstrictive effect. The choice of nasal drops for infants and children under 7 years old is quite wide, so the doctor can always recommend an analogue of Sialor.

The reference point for the pediatrician and ENT in the selection of the drug is the cause of the common cold and the nature of the discharge (clear or purulent). Self-administration and uncontrolled intake of drops lead to allergic reactions and other unpredictable consequences. It is also impossible to run a runny nose, therefore, at its first symptoms, it is important to visit a doctor.

During the off-season, the human respiratory tract is more prone to inflammatory diseases. This is due to temperature fluctuations. Almost every cold is accompanied by a runny nose. This symptom is especially common in children. To eliminate it, various cleaning solutions, sprays and nasal drops are used. Many reviews of doctors and patients are advised to use Sialor for the treatment of the common cold. You will learn about its composition, correct application and tax from our article.

What is Sialor?

For a long time, Protargol was used as an antiseptic drug based on silver. This drug was made only in special departments of pharmacies. At home, it was stored for no more than one month.

A few years ago, Russian scientists created an analogue of Protargol. It is available in the form of tablets, from which a 2% antiseptic solution of Sialor is prepared independently. Until these tablets are diluted, the Protargol analogue can be stored for two years. Preparing a solution is not difficult.

Sialor (Protargol) - composition and action

The active component of Protargol and its analogue is silver proteinate. The composition of the solution also includes purified water, which is mixed with tablets to obtain the drug. Thus, Sialor and Protargol are two drugs with the same composition and pharmacological action.

Solution Sialor (Protargol) has antimicrobial activity by destroying microorganisms. After the application of Protargol, a protective film is formed on the mucous membranes, which contributes to the death of old bacteria and protects against the appearance of new ones. The drug constricts the vessels of the sinuses, which greatly facilitates breathing. In addition, after its application, the damaged mucosa heals much faster.

Vasoconstrictor drugs are often prescribed to relieve nasal congestion. They first eliminate the pathogen, and then forcibly disrupt the blood circulation in the nasal mucosa. Such actions can lead to mucosal atrophy. Therefore, it is not recommended to use Xylometazoline and Naphthyzine frequently.

Sialor has a local disinfecting effect and practically safe for children from birth. It is shown:

  • as a hygiene product for washing the nasal passages in babies;
  • for the prevention of inflammatory and infectious diseases in autumn and winter;
  • for the treatment of infectious, allergic, vasomotor rhinitis;
  • for the treatment of adenoiditis, otitis media, hay fever.

Contraindications

Protargol is contraindicated for use in case of hypersensitivity to its components and in the following diseases:

  • glaucoma;
  • atherosclerosis;
  • tachycardia;
  • arterial hypertension;
  • thyrotoxicosis;
  • atrophic rhinitis.

0.1% solution of Sialor should not be used children up to the age of 6 years. With caution, the drug should be used by pregnant and lactating mothers, people suffering from diabetes, prostatic hyperplasia and angina pectoris.

Sialor - instructions for use

The drug for the common cold requires preliminary preparation. For this you should:

  1. Open a container with 10 ml of purified water and pour it into the enclosed dark bottle.
  2. Release one 200 mg tablet from the packaging.
  3. Throw the tablet into the water, close and shake the vial until it is completely dissolved. In some cases, the tablet may take at least 10 minutes to dissolve.

Sialor drops should work dark brown. When preparing them, it should be borne in mind that the blister tablet should be removed immediately before being placed in purified water. This is explained by the fact that silver proteinate, oxidized in fresh air, quickly loses its beneficial properties.

Ready-made drops should be stored in the refrigerator for no more than one month. After each use, the bottle with the solution must be tightly closed.

Application

A solution of 0.1% is prescribed for adults and children aged at least six years. Two or three drops are recommended to be instilled four times a day.

A solution of 0.05% can be used to treat babies from birth by instilling one or two drops once or twice a day into each nasal passage.

Before using Sialor or Protargol drops, it is recommended to clean the nasal passages.

After using the drug, in some cases, there may be allergic reactions in the form of redness or itching. With prolonged and frequent use of drops, you may experience:

  • dryness, burning and irritation of mucous membranes;
  • sneezing
  • hypersecretion.

Rarely occurs:

  • vomit;
  • headache;
  • increase in blood pressure;
  • violation of the heart rhythm;
  • swelling of the nasal mucosa;
  • visual impairment;
  • sleep disorders.

Prolonged use of high doses can lead to depression.

Having a minimum of side effects, Sialor drops are able to cope even with a severe cold in just two to three days.

Sialor - reviews

I begin to treat my daughter for colds and runny nose at their slightest manifestations. However, the last time I was confused, because her nose was constantly running. Discomfort was also caused by liquid flowing down the back of the throat. The pediatrician said that the nose needs to be “dry” and prescribed Protargol for us. In the pharmacy, I was advised by its analogue in tablets - Sialor.

The drug turned out to be interesting. It turns out that before using the drop, you must first prepare it yourself. The set includes a bottle with a pipette, some water and a tablet. After throwing the tablet into water and waiting for it to dissolve, the solution can be used. We have been using it for seven days. During this time, the nose cleared completely and the runny nose disappeared. The drops help really well, and it is a pity that their shelf life is only thirty days.

Larisa, Russia

I want to write my review for those whose children go to kindergarten. Only two months my son goes to kindergarten and is already ill. This time, it was not possible to cure a runny nose with the usual drops for us. There was no discharge from the nose. They could not be pumped out or blown out. They clogged their nasal passages so much that the child began to eat and sleep poorly. After a while, coughing began and snot poured in a stream. Nothing helped until I remembered Protargol.

There was nothing else in the pharmacy, so I bought Sialor (Protargol) spray. Literally two puffs in each nostril and the discharge from the nose stopped flowing. At night, the spray was used again, and breathing was slightly restored. The son slept well. In the morning, the discharge appeared again, but we easily removed them with an aspirator. We were completely cured of a cold in just five days. Protargol is just a fairy tale! I advise all parents.

Yana, Russia

From a cold, the pediatrician prescribed Protargol to my sons. In the pharmacy, I saw that my friend recently praised these drops. With their help, she cured her daughter's runny nose in three days. It turned out that Sialor needed to be cooked. There are all the ingredients for this, and detailed instructions are written on the box. I have a black solution with which I began to treat my sons.

Already on the second day, the eldest son had no trace of a cold. The youngest son's nose stopped flowing, but congestion appeared. All secretions were collected in the nasal passages. Concluded that this tool is not suitable for everyone. In addition, my relative said that they also used Sialor drops for some time, but they stopped helping them. Now I don’t know if I will buy them for the treatment of my children next time. Moreover, they are stored for only a month.

Maria, Russia

I catch colds quite often and suffer from rhinitis. She treated a runny nose with a variety of means, including Sialor drops. It is about them that I want to write in my review. This drug costs more than 250 rubles. Sold in a cardboard box with a bear on it. When I bought the drug for the first time, I thought that there regular drop bottle. It turns out that the solution must be prepared from a tablet and special water. The result is rusty brown droplets. They can only be used for one month.

Before use, the nose must be washed. On the first day of a cold, these drops give relief only for a short time. But the runny nose completely disappears after three to four days. Their disadvantages include a short shelf life, an unpleasant taste and a feeling of dryness in the nose, which is not constant. Although these drops are effective, another drug is better for me to treat a runny nose.

Katerina, Russia

Runny nose in our baby first for three days we treated with Nazivin. He restored his breathing, but the runny nose did not go away. We went to the pediatrician again, who prescribed Protargol to us. As a result, I bought its analogue - Sialor. This is the first time I have seen such a medicine that you need to prepare yourself. Having mixed the tablet with the solution, I received drops of a dark brown color. I decided to check them for allergies and dripped the baby on the elbow. There was no reaction, which means that the remedy can be safely taken.

After instillation, the son began to cry a lot. I thought he was just reacting to the procedure itself. I decided to try the drops on myself, and felt a burning sensation in my nose. Naturally, in a small child, the sensations are even worse. In addition, after using Sialor, nasal discharge began to simply flow in a stream. There is nothing in the manual about this. But later I read reviews where they advised not to use this remedy at night. We did not know about this, and therefore we had to clean the spout every ten minutes for an hour before going to bed.

The medicine from the nasal passages is very difficult to clear. It looks like glue has been dropped into them. For three days we were treated with this medicine, but no improvement expected. In addition, Sialor costs almost three hundred rubles, and as a result, almost half of the drops have to be thrown away. It is unrealistic to spend the entire solution in one treatment, and it is stored for only thirty days. We went to an appointment with an ENT doctor, who said that Protargol drops should be instilled in children very carefully, since silver ions quite often cause allergic reactions in babies. I read a lot of positive reviews about this drug, but I myself will not advise it to anyone.

Marina, Russia

I always thought that Protargol was prescribed only for babies and was very surprised when the attending physician prescribed this drug to my thirteen-year-old daughter. In the pharmacy we were given its analogue - Sialor. At home, we prepared a solution that I dripped for myself and my daughter, since we were both sick. From the drops that have fallen into the throat, a slight bitterness is felt. But there is nothing wrong with that. to me Sialor didn't help at all. He did not eliminate mucus and did not relieve nasal congestion. The runny nose went away in a week, but, I think, on its own. I did not feel the therapeutic effect of the drug at all.

My daughter had a complication, so together with Protargol she was also treated with antibiotics. Her runny nose was gone in three days. I suppose that this antimicrobial agent is good to use for the prevention of rhinitis and for complications as an auxiliary drug in combination with antibiotics. However, I myself will not buy it again and will refrain from recommendations.
