So today this role of mine serves me faithfully. Recently I was walking down the street, and a woman rushed up to me: “God, I’m so glad to see you! How I love you!” Once again I caught myself thinking: how great it is when you are loved. Any artist can only dream about this!— In one of your interviews, you said that your mother prepared you to be an artist almost from the cradle. Really?
- Yes, we can say that even earlier... While still pregnant, she told her dad: “If a girl is born, we’ll call her Svetlana.” Can you imagine how beautiful it will sound: “actress Svetlana Svetlichnaya”?” The fact is that in her youth she herself dreamed of becoming an actress, but she married a military man. My brother was born, followed by me... And the fact that I became an actress, of course, is a great merit of my mother.- What did she do for this?
- Yes all! Imagine: Armenia, Leninakan, where I was born, and where we lived then. The country is torn by war. Hunger, devastation... Nevertheless, my mother (by the way, a Don Cossack woman with a marvelous figure!), even in such a difficult situation, remained a great fashionista and craftswoman - she knew how to create her own wardrobe from virtually nothing, from scrap materials. And from a very early age she tried to dress me up fashionably and beautifully. I always wore bright bows, elegant dresses with frills, the likes of which no one else had. How can you not become an artist after this?!But I never, never considered or felt myself to be a beauty, much less a sex symbol (as everyone wrote after “The Diamond Arm”). Honestly, I'm not flirting.
— What then, in your opinion, is the highlight of Svetlana Svetlichnaya?
“As I sometimes half-jokingly say in such cases: “I’m just damn charming, natural, I have charm.” In addition, I have taste, I always knew how to be relaxed, and was not afraid to smile. And, just like my mother, she could always create a “clothing masterpiece” out of nothing. I turned 74 in May, but I still wear miniskirts and try to look decent. I am an actress and I am an example for many women of my age who have almost given up on themselves. — Is it true that after graduating from school, your mother herself bought you a train ticket and sent you to Moscow to “study to become an artist”?
- Yes, that’s what she said: “Pack your suitcase, daughter, and go!” And I did the right thing in insisting, because I myself was afraid to go to unfamiliar Moscow. Especially when I arrived and found out that VGIK had a competition of 80 people per place. By God, I wanted to turn around and immediately go home. But I felt ashamed in front of my mother, I had to at least try.— But your most vivid impressions are connected with your studies?
— It was incredibly interesting to study! I liked all subjects, and most of all I loved acting and dancing. Our acting course was combined with directing. We had a wonderful relationship, a unique creative atmosphere! Andrei Tarkovsky, Vasily Shukshin came to us... Andron Konchalovsky, Galina Polskikh, Valery Nosik studied on our course.— And your future husband Vladimir Ivashov, by that time already a recognized superstar of almost the world screen...
— She and Zhanna Prokhorenko came to us in their second year. Mikhail Ilyich Romm brought them and introduced them. And everyone at VGIK already knew that they starred in “The Ballad of a Soldier,” which created a sensation at the Cannes and Venice film festivals. I remember well how Volodya came into our classroom: in jeans (which then, perhaps, about a hundred people in the entire Soviet Union had), a cowboy hat, slender, long-legged. And incredibly shy! He had not yet managed to take an empty seat, and the girls of the entire course were already head over heels in love with him. Of course, I won’t hide it, I also liked him right away, but I didn’t show it. To be honest, I thought that he and Zhanna were having an affair. Fortunately, I was wrong.
- How did this turn out?
— At the rehearsal of the play “Cossacks” based on Leo Tolstoy, according to the script, we were supposed to kiss him. When Volodya kissed me, I felt like an electric shock. I suddenly felt that he was kissing not the heroine of the play, not the actress and partner, but me - Sveta Svetlichnaya. That is for real! That means he likes me. And soon, accompanying me to the hostel where I lived, Volodya unexpectedly admitted: “Svetka, it seems to me that I love you!” These were probably the happiest moments of my life. I was in seventh heaven! She ran to call her parents in Melitopol: “Ma-a-ama! - she shouted into the phone. “I think I’ll get married soon!” - "For whom?" - “Watch “The Ballad of a Soldier.” I’m marrying Alyosha Skvortsov!” The parents went to the cinema, then the mother punished: “Daughter, tell me exactly when you will arrive so that we have time to prepare cutlets and moonshine.”— Was the wedding gorgeous?
— We signed on January 16, 1961. We celebrated in Melitopol, during the winter holidays, and the scale of our wedding amazed Volodya, his family, and our entire course. Especially the fact that in the south of Ukraine there was literally everything: lard, meat, baked geese, and fruits... Muscovites were used to buying everything in 50 grams, but here food was measured in basins, wine in barrels. We rode around the city in troikas and walked around as mummers.Young, happy. Of course, your whole life is ahead of you! True, later, when they returned to Moscow, they moved to Volodya’s parents in an 18-meter room in a communal apartment! And six of us lived there. Do you know how we slept? (Laughs.) At night we put the table on its side and laid it on the floor. Volodya’s younger sister slept on a chest behind the closet, and the three of us went to bed: me, Volodya and his brother Yurka.
- Apparently, this is the case when it’s heaven with a sweetheart and in a hut?
- And this is not an exaggeration! But when our eldest son Alyosha was born - he was named after Alyosha Skvortsov - it became very difficult. Thank you, film director Georgy Naumovich Chukhrai wrote a letter to the competent authorities, in which he mentioned that the artist, who played the main role in the famous war film, lives in inhumane conditions. Like, “Foreign journalists are looking for Ivashov, but there is nowhere to bring them.” Only then were we given a separate two-room apartment on 2nd Frunzenskaya. I almost cried with joy. — You played your first big role — Nadya Kolchina in Tatiana Lioznova’s film “They Conquer the Sky” — in 1961, while still a student at VGIK. How did it feel to debut?
- Incredible! Of course, my partners were Nikolai Rybnikov, Evgeny Evstigneev, Oleg Zhakov. Can you imagine how venerable they are? And I... I was entrusted with the role of the wife of the pilot played by Rybnikov. I was aged, he was rejuvenated. But it turned out to be a very good couple. And the film turned out great.— However, in the 60s, directors did not spoil you very much with invitations. Why?
— I think the reason for my lack of demand in Soviet cinema could have been my non-Soviet appearance - after all, I was very similar to Western actresses. But it was almost the most exiting one. As part of various Soviet delegations, I was in a huge number of countries - Mexico, Chile, France, Sweden. Traveled almost half the world! At the same time, the strangest and most terrible thing for me was that I went there as a “Russian beauty”, as a “decoration” of these delegations, but with other people’s paintings. They didn’t take me to the main roles. They filmed others, but they only boasted about me!A few years ago, a journalist came up to me and said: “Svetlana, do you know that Luchino Visconti wanted to meet you, dreamed of filming you? He was simply in love with your eyes." I didn’t believe it, and he sent me a newspaper with an interview with the master, where he really talks about it. And I didn’t even know about it! It turns out that he saw me at some festival and sent me an invitation through Goskino. But they told him that I was “extremely busy at home, and they couldn’t let me go.” Although in reality I was unemployed. In general, I have something to regret. Creative life, like personal life, depends on some little things, on sudden luck: you went exactly the right way and met exactly the right person. Or I didn’t meet you. A lot depends on luck. This is what happened to me in The Diamond Arm with the role of Anna Sergeevna.
— Your heroine immediately and firmly entered the list of the most fatal beauties of the Soviet screen. How did you get there?
“When they called me and offered this role, I was honestly surprised. But I came for a screen test. Gaidai, seeing me, briefly said: “It’ll do.” The costume designer and I went to the wardrobe room to find a swimsuit for photo tests: apparently, they wanted to see if my legs were crooked. It turned out that my legs were just right, so much so that in the film I was already filmed in a bikini: at that time, for the chaste Soviet cinema of a country where there was no sex, this was an unprecedented case.
— Admit it: was it scary?
- What about that?! Imagine: what it meant forty years ago to film half-naked in the presence of a huge number of men from the film crew. Plus, people came running from other pavilions: a rumor instantly spread that “now Svetlichnaya will undress.” I became especially nervous when they asked me to rip off my bra and throw it on the floor. She was shaking like an aspen leaf! And Yuri Vladimirovich Nikulin helped me in this situation. He called me aside and said: “Svetka, why are you trembling? Don't look at anyone, just at me, I am my own person. I’ll play along with you in this scene.” He said it so convincingly that all my fears instantly disappeared. And one might say, they inspired all the feats that I accomplished on the screen.— The film was released, and you became famous throughout the country.
“Indeed, I was incredibly popular, I was recognized on the streets and in shops. All Soviet fashionistas then went crazy looking for a pink robe with mother-of-pearl buttons. I was inundated with letters asking me to help buy this robe!— How did your husband react to this role and your success?
“The funny thing is that before, when they saw us, people said: “Look, Ivashov went with his wife.” Or they exclaimed when they saw me: “This is the wife of that same Alyosha Skvortsov!” And after “The Diamond Arm” the situation changed dramatically. Now they began to whisper behind his back: “Look, look, this is the husband of that same Svetlichnaya!” In fact, in our family there was no trace of any competition or jealousy for creativity. We often went on tour together, even traveled half of Africa together, and always rejoiced at each other’s successes.— What did you do in Africa?
— “Exported” socialism to fraternal peoples, strengthened friendship. And me too. I will never forget how my husband and I ended up in Mali as part of a delegation of Soviet cultural figures. And we were incredibly happy - this country seemed to us the peak of civilization. After Guinea, where it was very scary. How we weren’t eaten there is still a mystery to me. — 35 years of marriage is a rare case in the cinematic environment. Nevertheless, excuse me, of course, but rumors about your numerous novels still circulate. Or is this not gossip?
- Yes, I don’t hide it - I’m an amorous person. And I don’t see anything reprehensible in this! I believe that a woman is created for love. Besides, I'm an actress. I wanted to shine, to be surrounded by fans. And of course, I was spoiled by male attention. And Volodya knew everything, I didn’t make a secret. Once Stanislav Rostotsky confessed his love to me right in front of him. Or I could tell Volodya: “You know, in order to play Gabi well in Seventeen Moments, I need to fall in love with Slava Tikhonov.”- Fell in love?
- (Laughs). For many years everyone has been torturing me: “Did you have something with Stirlitz or not?” I answer: “This is a secret that no one will know...” By the way, Volodya really loved me in the role of Gabi. And he treated our profession with understanding, separated cinema and real life.— Among your fans are the poet, screenwriter Gennady Shpalikov, Yuri Gagarin...
— Gena Shpalikov was deeply in love with me back in college, before my marriage, he actively courted me, admired my eyes, and even wrote a script in which the main role was intended for me. But then I was not ready for a serious relationship. And Yuri Alekseevich Gagarin was not just a fan, he simply sympathized with me. Before traveling as part of the Soviet delegation to Chile (where I was the only woman!) I was invited to the Central Committee of the Komsomol of Ukraine “for instruction,” and Yuri Alekseevich was there. After returning from Santiago, we were sent to one of the rest homes, and Gagarin also went. We played basketball, volleyball and had a great time. Later he invited Volodya and me to his country house. He kept saying: “Volodya, how lucky you are to have such a beautiful wife.” And I was very flattered by this.
- Since we're talking about this topic. There are still rumors that on the set of “The Diamond Arm” Andrei Mironov did not give you access...
- We didn’t have any romance! And it couldn’t be: I worked on site for only three days: one in the pavilion and two in Anapa, on location. I filmed and left a couple of days later. Where does the novel come from?! Yes, Andryusha was easily inflamed at the sight of an attractive woman, but he had enough of them even without me - few people refused him. Although there were rumors about us later. And - the funny thing is - there was a reason. (Laughs).- Here you go. So, after all, there is no smoke without fire...
— After the end of filming, the group and I celebrated this event with champagne, I had a little too much to celebrate. And Andryusha and I went swimming in the sea - hence the rumors. I swam far enough, but it was hot, and I felt bad. As a result, I almost drowned, and Mironov saved me - he helped me get to shore. I thanked him, kissed him, and he kissed me in return... And that’s all - except for those kisses, we had nothing. And then everyone asked me: “Is this true? This is true?" Someone later even wrote that “Mironov loved Svetlana Svetlichnaya most of all.” Of course, it also sounds flattering, but it’s not true.No matter what they said about Volodya and me, we couldn’t imagine life without each other. — You were called “the most beautiful couple in Russian cinema.” Why didn't you meet each other on screen?
“We never set the conditions that we would only act together. In a serious way, we only starred together with Stanislav Rostotsky in “A Hero of Our Time.” And in total we only had three films in common - “The Aunt with Violets” and “New Adventures of the Elusive Ones”. But we worked for many years on the stage of the Film Actor’s Theater. We had a very interesting joint work - “Demons” by Dostoevsky. I played Maria Lebyadkina, Volodya played Stavrogin. — It is known that after you left the Film Actor’s Theater together, your husband was forced to work in construction...
— We left the theater deliberately. We were told that there would be no new roles, and those performances in which we played would be removed from the repertoire. But we did the right thing by leaving - the main cause of the conflict was a banal struggle for space. Another thing is that in the early 90s we could not find work in Moscow. People often ask me: how did such an artist end up on a construction site?! Yes, that's it! There was nothing to eat! To survive, we traveled with the play “The Cook” to towns and villages and performed not for a fee, but for a can of canned food and a stick of sausage. And when it got even worse, Volodya went to build hangars and warehouses. He deliberately left the house in rubber boots, a knitted hat, and a padded jacket so that he would not be recognized. But they still recognized him and were surprised... The husband suffered terribly from his lack of demand, from the fact that he could not feed his family. Due to the fact that at the age of 55, being not a very healthy person, he carried bricks all day long, handed slate, loaded cinder blocks, he developed an ulcer, he underwent surgery, and he died in the hospital. I think he died from anxiety. Volodya could not live without the theater, without roles.I tried my best to help him, I didn’t sit idly by. It got to the point that I wanted to become a janitor - sweep Neskuchny Garden. One friend offered to take three or four pairs of Canadian shoes from her and sell them second-hand. Almost every day I was running around with boxes, and I earned $20 a day, which was a good help. Then, when Volodya passed away, she learned to trade vacuum cleaners at special courses.
— Weren’t buyers surprised that Svetlana Svetlichnaya sells vacuum cleaners?
- Not a bit. It was a crazy time - it was like the world had turned upside down! There was a period after Volodya left when I cleaned the apartment of a wealthy businessman neighbor: I kept it clean and washed the floors. Moreover, at first the neighbor flatly refused, saying that I was his idol. But I had to explain that I simply wouldn’t survive without this, and he agreed. I swear, at that moment I didn’t even think for a second whether this was humiliating for an honored artist or not. Both me and my youngest son Olezhka needed something to eat, something to wear. For some reason, everyone thinks that life should consist of fluttering, joy, wealth, but I came to a different conclusion: we were sent here for tests - both physical and moral.— After the death of your husband, you suffered another blow - you lost your youngest son.
— I learned to withstand the blows of fate. If I were an unbeliever, I wouldn’t be able to bear the loss of Oleg. We were very close. He was a very young and very talented boy, he was only 33. Now I know that the Lord took Olezhka, and so he decided to make me even stronger.EVERYTHING IN THIS WORLD IS BUILT ON LOVE!
— I will assume that the “rebirth” of actress Svetlana Svetlichnaya is connected with the film “Goddess. How I fell in love" by Renata Litvinova, where you played an unusual, bright role. This is true?
— You see, when an actor begins to be forgotten, he begins to fade, and not only physically. Fame is fleeting, lightning fast. Some people can’t stand it, they become drunkards and go crazy. Therefore, I am extremely grateful to Renata that, as a result of this work, people started talking about me again as an actress.— And they started actively filming you again. - Of course, everything in this world is built on love. In general, I believe that when a person loses this feeling, he stops living.- But, apparently, this is not about you...
- Undoubtedly. I don’t hide my age, I live a normal acting life, surrounded by fans. And recognition and love are enough for me. I mean love as an actress. Otherwise our yellow press will immediately write about it. I remember she once said that she refused to act in film because there was a lot of text in the script - I couldn’t memorize it. An article was immediately published with the headline “Svetlichnaya is losing her memory!” (Laughs).“Your energy and zest for life can be the envy of many young people.” How do you do this?
— I don’t have any special secrets. It seems to me that attitude is very important. There are people whose lives are difficult, but the person is so determined to love, to goodness. It all depends on the strength of spirit! So I can say that this spirit has been in me, apparently, since birth. Because I have, perhaps, even more trials than others. But when I feel bad, I always tell myself: “Sveta, it could have been worse.” Last winter I slipped on the street, broke my arm and leg, but said to myself: “It could have been worse!” And the pain was hellish, and the heart could stop because there was a displaced fracture. It was lucky that passers-by woke up and called an ambulance. Isn’t such a trauma a reason to fall apart and cry from morning to evening? And they took me, covered in a cast, on a gurney around the hospital like an exhibit. Not as a famous actress, but as a patient with a strong spirit. The doctors said: “Now we will take you to the ward, where everyone is whimpering. We’ll show you to these whiners.”Another very important thing is the environment. When I find myself in the company of pleasant, touching and kind people, that’s it, I don’t need anything else. I can endure any pain. I blossom after this. And all kinds of creams and rubs are not the most important thing. You need to love yourself. I fell in love with myself, maybe ten years ago. — Whatever one may say, you come from the USSR. What pleasantly surprises you most today?
- Very smart children. Especially technically. They are ready to live in space. And I don’t even know how the Internet works, I don’t have it, and never will. I know how a kettle, iron, electric stove and TV work. I've had enough. And now there are families where they have given up television. Maybe they're right. But I don’t refuse, because sometimes I want to look at myself, at my interviews that I give out on TV channels. I want to watch my films, because some have hardly been shown before. - All! I only have one painting that I don't like. She's not interesting! And everything else... I made my debut in the poignant “Lullaby” by the same Kalik. For me, first of all, it is important who you filmed with and with whom. Therefore, I really appreciate all the episodes that I played - the lady in “Father Sergius”, Gabi in “Seventeen Moments of Spring”, the flight attendant in “Not Under Judgment”.— About twenty years ago you said in an interview that you consider yourself the “queen of the episode.” Does this sound proud to you?

- I think not even ages, but states. There have been many of them in my life! First childhood, youth, then maturity, wisdom. And now - gratitude to life for everything. I am grateful that life did not punish me and make me unrecognizable. I celebrated the new year 2014 in Tarusa, in a holiday home. It was very interesting there, people had fun and were happy. But they were even more glad that they saw Svetlichnaya alive. And this is the best gift for me!
-You still have an ideal figure. Is it genes or are you doing something special?
— Genes are genes, but I keep myself in shape all my life. From the age of 28 she was a walrus fisher - according to Porfiry Ivanova’s system, she walked barefoot and doused herself with cold water. And I am still sure that this is one of the surest ways to be cheerful, not acquire incurable diseases and not grow old. I lived on Leninsky Prospekt, and Neskuchny Garden is nearby. In the same 1958, at the insistence of her mother, Svetlana entered VGIK, which she graduated from in 1963, course. We studied with her on the course, Valery Nosik.
After graduating from university, she joined the troupe of the Film Actor's Studio Theater. Among the most famous works is the role of Marya Timofeevna Lebyadkina in the play “Demons” based on the novel by F.M. Dostoevsky.
She made her film debut in 1960 in Mikhail Kalik’s film “Lullaby”.
And her first big role - Nadya Kolchina - in the film by Tatiana Lioznova "They conquer the sky" she played in 1961, while still a student at VGIK. Her partners were Nikolai Rybnikov, Evgeny Evstigneev, Oleg Zhakov. Svetlichnaya was entrusted with the role of the wife of the pilot, played by Rybnikov. “They aged me, they rejuvenated him. But it turned out to be a very good couple. And the film turned out great,” she recalled.
The film was released in 1965 "Cook", in which she played the main role - Pavlina Khutornaya, a young widow. The film was coldly received by critics: “I remember when it came out, a mocking article appeared in the Soviet Screen entitled “Drama with a Half-Load.” Everyone was criticizing it,” the actress recalled. But the audience received the film well.
She received widespread love from the audience after her role as the fatal temptress Anna Sergeevna in the comedy "The Diamond Arm". In this role, Svetlichnaya, albeit with humor, embodied a completely new type of woman at that time - modern, stylish, sexually liberated. This was the first semi-erotic scene in Soviet cinema.
The actress recalled how difficult that scene was for her: “Imagine: what it meant forty years ago to film half-naked in the presence of a huge number of men from the film crew. Plus, people came running from other pavilions: a rumor instantly spread that “now Svetlichnaya will undress.” Especially I got nervous when they asked me to tear off my bra and throw it on the floor. I was shaking like a leaf! And Yuri Vladimirovich Nikulin helped me in this situation. He called me aside and said: “Svetka, why are you shaking? Don’t look at anyone, only for me, I am my own person. In this scene, I will play along with you." He said it so convincingly that all my fears instantly disappeared."

As Svetlana Afanasyevna admitted, at one time she was upset that her name was associated primarily with the role of Anna Sergeevna from “The Diamond Arm,” but then she reconciled: “I think: let one of the current stars play the episode in such a way that it will be for everyone memorable. In Soviet times, as part of various kinds of delegations, the actress was in a huge number of countries - in all socialist countries, in Mexico, Chile, France, Sweden... She herself said: “She traveled almost half the world! Her bottomless blue eyes captivated the famous film master Luchino Visconti; he dreamed of seeing Svetlichnaya in his films. But the Soviet film industry did not approve of this.
