Founder

Vladimir Andreevich Almazov stood at the origins of the Center. This famous Russian cardiologist, academician, professor of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences was a graduate of the 1st Leningrad medical institute named after ak. Pavlova. For 47 years of his life, Almazov trained highly qualified personnel. He was an employee of the University. ak. Pavlov, whose diploma he himself received. Which departments were originally part of the Almazov Center? There were only five of them. Today the Almazov Center (St. Petersburg) is headed by Evgeniy Vladimirovich Shlyakhto. The successor and follower of the Russian scientist took his post in 2001, after Almazov left. Shlyakhto is an Honored Worker of Sciences of Russia and Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences. History of development

The budgetary state federal research institution of the Ministry of Health of Russia, which is the Center, was founded in 1980. Its organization was caused by an urgent need due to the ever-increasing scale of morbidity, as well as disability of the population caused by pathologies of the circulatory system.

The first Institute of Cardiology was opened in Moscow. The initiator of its appearance was Academician E.I. Chazov. After this, the new Leningrad Research Institute arose, which was initially considered the Institute of Cardiology of the RSFSR. It was headed by Almazov.

The city leadership transferred a cardiorheumatic dispensary to the institute, as well as a hospital with a capacity of 300 beds. In addition, there were highlighted budget funds necessary for the renovation of the clinic.

The Center was given the global task of improving existing ones and creating the latest techniques diagnostics, prevention and treatment of various types cardiovascular pathologies. This would improve the health of the population and reduce morbidity and mortality among Russians.

In 1987, a cardiac surgery department was created at the institute. This allowed the Center’s specialists to move to a higher level of providing medical care to the population. The institute rented premises located in the building of the 4th city hospital.

Today, this institution of the Russian Ministry of Health is one of the leading centers in the country where cardiac surgery and cardiac care, applied and fundamental research is carried out. It also provides training for advanced training of specialists and scientists.

Construction of new buildings

Back in the eighties, it became obvious that the institute was not receiving proper development due to the limited space available to it. That is why in 1987 the task was given to design a modern clinical complex capable of accommodating 480 patients. In addition, the building provided for a polyclinic department. It was designed for three hundred and sixty visits per shift.

According to plans, the construction of the building was supposed to be completed in 1992. However, due to the lack of proper funding, construction was frozen for almost 10 years.

A new stage in the fate of the unfinished building began in 2001. It was then that preparations were made for the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the founding of St. Petersburg, and the building became an object included in the list of those whose construction should be completed.

The new clinical and outpatient building was inaugurated in the fall of 2006. In addition to the main departments, it houses the largest blood transfusion station in St. Petersburg.

In 2007, a decree of the Russian Government was issued, which indicated the need to create state perinatal centers. Almazov Medical Center included one of them. The perinatal center in St. Petersburg began accepting patients on November 1, 2010.
