Hybrid cameras of the year rating. How to choose a DSLR camera

Friends, using the example of our colleagues from DPRevue, we decided to make for you a selection of top-end compact cameras. As a rule, the name “compact” implies a light weight and small size of the camera, however, the article included cameras without an interchangeable lens. The result is a rather interesting set of cameras with a 1-inch and APS matrix, with a fast fixed lens and zoom, pocket-sized and not very sized.

The Canon G7 X Mark II brings significant improvements to the first version of this renowned one-inch compact. The camera has a new Digic 7 processor, thanks to which the burst shooting speed has increased to 8 frames per second in RAW and JPG format simultaneously. The camera has become even more grippy, the image stabilization system is more effective, and the screen began to rotate not only up, but also down.

At your service large number function buttons, a well-designed touch interface, a control ring around the lens, a fast zoom lens with a variable aperture of F1.8-2.8 and an equivalent focal length of 24-100 mm and, finally, it all ends with a 1-inch BSI CMOS sensor.

A typical Fujifilm camera, made in retro design and attracting the attention of not only amateur photographers, but also “ordinary” people passing by. It has a built-in 28 mm prime lens with F2.8 aperture, a well-proven X-Trans CMOS II sensor and the much-loved Fuji film simulation modes.

In addition, the camera has a hybrid focusing system with 77 points, a 3-inch touchscreen, manual setting of absolutely all photography parameters and 8 (eight!) customizable buttons.

The first rugged camera from the legendary Leica. Water protection is provided up to a depth of 15 meters, and it also has a shock-resistant and dust-proof housing. The lens was chosen very well, it is a 23 mm F1.7 Summilux ASPH, which ultimately results in a 35 mm equivalent focal length with a 16 MP APS-C CMOS matrix.

Of course, you have already noticed the built-in flash, located immediately above the lens barrel, which will be very useful for an underwater photography enthusiast. Don’t forget that cameras from this manufacturer are much more expensive than their analogues. There is a suspicion that this camera in Russia will only be seen in stores, and even then not in all of them.

By the way, the camera design was invented by Audi Design.

Lumix LX10 / LX15 is essentially Sony's response to its now five-year-old RX100 series of cameras, which once blew up the compact camera market and this fact, of course, haunts its competitors. LX10 / LX15 is equipped with a 20 MP CMOS sensor measuring 1 inch, a 24-72 mm zoom lens with variable aperture F1.4-2.8 and is capable of shooting very high-quality 4K video. You will be pleased with the body, it is completely metal, has a built-in flash and a redesigned touchscreen interface.

The LX10 / LX15 uses a Depth-from-Defocus (DFD) focusing system that provides fast and accurate autofocus, including for moving subjects, and there are also several image stabilization options for both video and still photography.

Panasonic FZ2500 / FZ2000 is a continuation of the FZ1000 super zoom model. The camera has a 1-inch 20 MP CMOS matrix, standard for such cameras (have you already noticed that all top compacts are now equipped with matrices of this exact size?), and at the same time a non-standard 24-480 mm zoom lens with a variable aperture F2. 8-4.5. This is both a good camera for both video and photography, Panasonic took care of this and installed a built-in variable ND filter (allowing you to reduce the exposure, thereby lengthening the shutter speed or shooting at an open aperture), a fully rotatable screen, image output via HDMI and video recording in 4K resolution and 10-bit 4:2:2 format.

It doesn't look like a compact camera anymore, does it? But you get a very high-quality and versatile superzoom for photo and video shooting.

The Lumix DMC-ZS100 / TZ100 model symbolizes Panasonic's return to the market of compact cameras for travelers (travel-zoom cameras or simply travel compacts) and is located somewhat far from other models. The camera has a quite decent zoom for its size at 25-250 mm EGF (equivalent focal length) and with an aperture of F2.8-5.9. The dimensions are such that they allow you to easily put it in your pocket.

As is typical for other Panasonic cameras, the DMC-ZS100 / TZ100 has excellent detailed 4K video and you will be pleasantly surprised by the built-in flash with viewfinder in such a small body.

The best thing about this camera is its lens. The stunning super zoom 24-600 mm EGF and F2.4-4 aperture, developed by Zeiss, has exceptional sharpness across the entire focal range from wide angle to telephoto. The camera is equipped with a CMOS sensor already familiar to us from the RX10 Mark II model with 20 megapixels and a size of 1 inch, which offers video shooting in 4K resolution and ultra slow-motion recording.

RX100 V on at the moment is the most advanced in the RX100 line of cameras and already the fifth model, equipped with a 20 MP inch sensor (and again 1 inch), a 24-70 mm Zeiss lens with an aperture of F1.8-2.8, an insane burst shooting speed of 24 frames per second, and this with autofocus tracking and autoexposure enabled.

Naturally this is just the beginning. To this we can safely add 4K video shooting, which has already become common for top compacts of 2016, the ability to record ultra slow-motion video, a built-in electronic viewfinder and a rotating display. And all this latest technology will fit into your pocket, tempting, isn't it?

If you are interested in this camera, then we have a more detailed article about it, perhaps it will help you do right choice — .

This concludes the list of the main compact cameras of 2016. Write, what new products of this year do you remember the most? Perhaps you're even looking at one of these to buy?

Like many other ingenious inventions, cameras are gradually becoming popular. Until recently, people used them only to somehow capture the main events in life. Now the art of photography has risen to new level. The requirements for devices have also increased, not only among professional photographers, but also among beginning amateur photographers. This is facilitated not only by people’s craving for beauty, but also by a wide selection of high-quality cameras for every taste and budget.

Best for creating high-quality images SLR cameras are suitable. They offer much higher resolution and photo quality than smaller mirrorless models. In addition, they offer many opportunities for creativity. The ability to alternate interchangeable lenses and a variety of multi-level settings are suitable for the most daring experiments. The high accuracy of DSLRs is achieved due to the complete coincidence of the image in the viewfinder window and the image entering the matrix through the lens. For professional photographers, such properties are a real necessity, while for beginners it is a wonderful chance to express themselves and please loved ones with bright photographs.

DSLR cameras, like devices in any other category, are not the same. Of course, first of all, they differ in the quality of photographs, which are determined by the quality of the matrix, ISO sensitivity and other features. However, it is important to remember some other parameters that are worth paying attention to:

  1. Reliability.
  2. Operating time without recharging.
  3. Functional.
  4. Ease of use.
  5. Variety of modes and settings.
  6. Accurate transmission of the frame to the viewfinder and screen.
  7. Additional features.
  8. Durable housing.

It is also recommended to pay attention to the purpose of the camera. After all, an amateur camera can hardly meet all the requirements of a sophisticated specialist. Conversely, a professional DSLR is not suitable for a beginner due to the abundance of complex settings and options, the correct use of which will require special knowledge and experience.

The best amateur DSLR cameras

An amateur SLR camera is the first step towards professional photography. But despite their intentions, newcomers continue to shoot “on the green button” for a long time. To make your immersion into the world of creative photography comfortable, evaluate the ergonomics, the presence of automatic modes, and the clarity of the interface. The number of megapixels, matrix size, and maximum ISO sensitivity are not important at the initial level. You will appreciate and feel the numerous technical subtleties only when you begin to freely navigate the manual settings.

3 Canon EOS 100D Kit

The best DSLR camera for travel
Country: Japan
Average price: RUB 29,989.
Rating (2019): 4.7

A lightweight and compact SLR camera is a godsend for travel lovers. When paired with a compact prime lens, it will take up minimal space and will not attract unnecessary attention. Perhaps male photographers will find the grip uncomfortable, but for a fragile girl the design is ideal.

Ergonomics are almost unaffected by the miniature size. The lack of some buttons is compensated by a responsive touch display and well-thought-out menus. Due to the size, the battery capacity is reduced (a full charge is enough for 380 frames), but the problem is solved by purchasing a spare unit. The build quality is not satisfactory. According to reviews, ISO up to 800 remains workable.

On the plus side, consumers note that the kit includes a Kit lens with an STM motor adapted for video. Recording videos makes it easy to focus by touching the screen in Liveview mode. The only disappointment is the lack of optical zoom when recording video and a rotating screen.
If you are looking for a model that has the advantages of a SLR camera and compact dimensions, then better option can't be found.

2 Canon EOS 2000D Kit

The best new model 2018. Light weight. Price - functionality
Country:
Average price: RUB 28,990.
Rating (2019): 4.7

The newest camera from the famous brand confidently became one of the best DSLRs for beginning photographers right at the very start of sales. Weighing only 475 grams and the most affordable price, the model has intuitive settings and an excellent set of properties. Unlike many competitors, the Canon 2000D - perfect choice for those who value innovation and the ability to instantly share priceless footage with friends on social networks.

Thanks to Wi-Fi and NFC support, pictures are transferred to a smartphone in seconds without loss of quality. These technologies also allow you to control the camera remotely, which is very convenient for group shooting. The manufacturer also took care of another popular feature - high-quality shooting of stories with neat background blur. Intelligent Scene Mode, Auto Creative Mode and helpful tips will greatly help amateur photographers just starting to master the DSLR.

At first glance, amateur and semi-professional SLR cameras differ little from each other: shooting modes, number of megapixels, similar buttons on the body. The difference in functionality makes itself felt when taking photographs.

Matrix quality. The more professional the camera, the more comfortable it is to work with it in low light conditions. To get by without a flash at dusk or in a darkened room, you have to raise the ISO. The quality of the resulting photos on budget models drops due to high noise, while for full-frame DSLRs even ISO over 3200 is considered working. Simply put, the photos turn out to be light and sharp.

Performance. Expensive SLR cameras have modern technical features and cope with the tasks faster. The speed of the shutter release, continuous shooting, recording information, and the capacity of the clipboard are important for a professional. If you shoot a series in heavy RAW format with an amateur camera, the memory buffer will fill up after 4-5 frames. Seconds of waiting are not important for an amateur, but with professional photography, time plays an important role.

Autofocus and exposure metering accuracy. The more advanced the technical characteristics, the more accurately the automation works. White balance without adjustment allows you to shoot in backlight (opposite the light source).

Camera resource. The wear and tear of the equipment depends on the quality of the materials used. As a rule, the shutter life of amateur DSLRs declared by manufacturers does not exceed 100 thousand frames. For enthusiasts, such a safety margin will last for many years, but for professional work it's too small. In addition, the reliability of a SLR camera depends on the strength of the body and dust and moisture protection.

Ergonomics. In amateur SLR cameras, most of the settings are hidden inside the camera. To change them, you need to go to the menu. The more professional the model, the more quick access buttons there are on the body. With their help, an experienced photographer can instantly adjust shooting parameters.

1 Nikon D5300 Kit

The best opportunities for professional growth
Country: Japan
Average price: RUB 39,990.
Rating (2019): 4.8

The price of an entry-level SLR camera is close to semi-professional models, but the equipment is worth the money and provides excellent potential for professional growth. Nikon has many automatic modes and artistic effects, but at the same time the technical characteristics of the camera are excellent.

Noise is not particularly noticeable until ISO 1000. The SLR camera has excellent dynamic range, fast autofocus, copes with tracking the subject during continuous shooting. But you won’t be able to fully enjoy the series due to the small clipboard. When choosing the RAW format, the camera spends a long time thinking about processing the information. The same contradiction applies to video recording. The full HD picture quality is beyond praise, but the focusing lets us down. In LiveView mode it is slow and noisy, which affects the overall experience.
Despite its shortcomings, the Nikon D5300 Kit is an excellent multi-point focusing DSLR. Paired with a prime lens, the camera will produce results close to professional photography. A nice bonus will be the built-in Wi-Fi and GPS modules, which allow you to control the camera from your phone and determine where the picture was taken.

Video review

The best advanced DSLR cameras

Semi-professional DSLR cameras are being looked at by photographers who have become closely acquainted with the capabilities of amateur DSLRs and dream of more functionality. Manufacturers rely on different characteristics - case reliability, autofocus speed, video recording. The choice depends on the purpose of use. Semi-professional models have improved ergonomics, but for a novice photographer, additional hot buttons can be confusing.

4 Nikon D7200 Body

External flash support. Hybrid autofocus. Best set ISO modes
Country:
Average price: RUB 63,489.
Rating (2019): 4.6

A powerful device for advanced photographers, it has become famous as the best studio DSLR in the mid-segment thanks to a number of the most important characteristics. In addition to a socket for attaching a tripod and recording voice comments, which are especially convenient for working with clients, the SLR camera is also equipped with a sync contact. This external flash terminal allows you to connect a non-standard flash, which can be useful when shooting in a studio environment.

However, Nikon is good not only for the studio. The housing with magnesium alloy covers, protected from dust and small amounts of moisture, guarantees reliable operation of the DSLR during location shooting. The AF camera also does beautiful photos in low light conditions. Hybrid autofocus combines the best features of contrast detection and phase detection autofocus, together with the sharpest LCD screen in the category to ensure accurate image display.

3 Canon EOS 80D Kit

Excellent matrix resolution. Maximum RAW series
Country: Japan (manufactured in Taiwan)
Average price: 67,490 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.7

Despite the emergence of more “fresh” devices, this proven model does not lose its relevance at all. For a mid-range SLR camera, it produces perhaps the best quality photos, even in motion. At the same time, the camera supports up to 25 original photographs in RAW format without compression and 110 photographs in the well-known JPEG. Therefore, many experts classify this advanced DSLR as one of the optimal solutions for shooting sporting events and other active events.

A good combination of cost and quality is confirmed by numerous reviews satisfied customers. Everyone praises the movable touch screen, gorgeous color reproduction and excellent Full HD videos. It's not uncommon for people to also note the good battery life, good for 960 photos or 160 minutes of video shooting. In addition, the camera boasts a number of modern technologies, including support for Wi-Fi, NFC and a connector for a remote control.

2 Nikon D7100 Kit

Optimal value for money.
Country: Japan
Average price: 64,990 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.8

The camera is not a full-frame camera, but its characteristics are close to those of professional models. The 51-point autofocus module and 24 megapixel matrix attract attention. To increase detail, the manufacturer removed the traditional optical low-pass filter. With such a matrix size, this did not lead to the appearance of moire, but made it possible to improve the quality characteristics. The dynamic range corresponds to the class of semi-professional equipment, ISO remains operational up to 1600.

Among other features, we note an enlarged 3.2-inch screen, a viewfinder with 100% frame coverage and a capacious battery. Optical zoom and autofocus in video adapt the camera to record scenes.

The build quality of the case is not satisfactory. Many functions are located on the hot buttons of the case; the owner will appreciate the ease of grip during prolonged use.

Nikon D7100 Kit will cope with most creative tasks and is suitable for both amateur and commercial photography. The only drawback typical of non-professional SLR cameras is a small memory buffer. At a stated speed of 6 frames per second, it instantly clogs up. But the time-tested model remains firmly at the top of the ratings and represents the best value for money.

1 Canon EOS 70D Kit

The best balanced semi-professional DSLR
Country: Japan
Average price: 71,440 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.9

A versatile and durable model that has stood the test of time. Novice amateur photographers will appreciate the intuitive menu and touch screen controls, while professionals will like the ergonomics with additional hot keys on the body. Protection from moisture and dust makes shooting in bad weather possible.

The camera has the best operating speed in its class - 7 frames per second: a capacious memory buffer has time to process information without annoying freezes. The 20 megapixel resolution is comparable to professional models. Photographers rate ISO up to 1600 (and sometimes up to 3200) as working.

Autofocus has 19 points with cross-shaped sensors. This is relatively little, but the new technology provides high speed focusing when shooting photos and videos. With an STM lens, your DSLR is ideal for recording scenes. A nice bonus is the Wi-Fi module, which provides communication with a mobile phone.

The best professional DSLR cameras

Professional SLR cameras are full frame. They got their name from a sensor that is the same size as a full frame of 35mm film. Compared to crop, the picture is sharp, detailed and large-scale. Professional cameras are also characterized by increased requirements for ergonomics and reliability. Additional control buttons help professionals quickly adjust settings, and the reinforced body with dust and moisture protection helps keep the camera safe when working in difficult conditions. DSLRs for professionals are designed for commercial photography. Often they do not have automatic modes, a built-in flash, and the lens is not included with the camera.

3 Nikon D750 Body

The best professional reportage camera
Country: Japan
Average price: RUB 121,440.
Rating (2019): 4.8

A lightweight, accurate and fast model, the advantages of which will be appreciated by reportage photographers. Excellent dynamics are created by the autofocus system: 51 focusing points cover a significant part of the frame. With these parameters it is comfortable to shoot scenes with fast moving objects. The manufacturers have worked out everything regarding the matrix without any complaints: there is both a high working ISO and a wide dynamic range. Nikon D750 is equipped with a rotating screen, rare for the professional class.

The first place in the ratings of the best SLR cameras is achieved by the high operating speed of 6.5 frames per second. But the capacity of the clipboard is slightly reduced, the camera freezes and thinks about processing the footage.

The camera has characteristics comparable to professional video cameras: the shooting speed at a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels is up to 60 frames per second. There are connectors for an external microphone and headphones, a capacious battery, and two slots for memory cards.
The functionality of an SLR camera is sufficient for commercial photography, but some professionals are skeptical about this model. The excessive versatility and cropped characteristics (for example, the minimum shutter speed of 1/4000) are confusing.

2 Canon EOS 6D Body

Best price/quality ratio
Country: Japan
Average price: 99,990 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.9

One of the most affordable full-frame cameras from Canon, which will allow you to unleash the capabilities of top-end optics. With L-series lenses it gives high detail and low noise. The Canon EOS 6D can even shoot night landscapes without using a flash. The number of focusing points is not as large as we would like, but autofocus is sensitive and comfortable.

A nice bonus is the popular Wi-Fi and GPS functions, which only a few models have so far. But this leads to an inevitable drawback - a plastic case that does not damp out extraneous noise and signals.

The speed of 4.5 frames per second is not enough for professional reportage shooting, but it is enough to solve most problems. The video recording function worked perfectly, there are no complaints about the sound and detail.

The ergonomics are not bad, but the button functionality is expectedly limited. For example, some photographers find the joystick combined with the wheel inconvenient.

Minor shortcomings do not prevent the SLR camera from taking first place in the ratings. The full-frame model beats out its competitors due to its affordable price. Canon EOS 6D - the best value for money.

1 Canon EOS 5D Mark III Body

Best quality among professional full frame cameras
Country: Japan
Average price: RUB 204,880.
Rating (2019): 5.0

The camera is considered the standard of quality in the world of photography and claims to be the best professional SLR camera. The third generation of the legendary 5D has become even more advanced. The full-frame 22-megapixel image sensor allows you to obtain minimal depth of field and, in conjunction with a fast prime lens, achieve spectacular background blur. Even at night, the camera produces sharp images with high detail. The magnesium alloy housing also helps reduce noise: the metal prevents the penetration of radio interference from mobile phones. In addition, the “carcass” has dust and moisture protection. Reliable equipment is not afraid of light falls, rain and sandstorms.

61 focus points cover almost the entire frame area. Autofocus will not let you down even when shooting dynamic scenes. Video recording parameters are comparable to professional video cameras.

Ergonomics are designed for tactile perception. The manufacturer has thought through every detail in the control system. For example, functions are controlled using a joystick, which is difficult to press accidentally.

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III occupies a leading position in the ratings. Even writing about such a camera is a pleasure, and holding it in your hands is a dream.

The best DSLR cameras with an electronic viewfinder

The fundamental difference between Sony SLR cameras and other brands is the technology with a translucent mirror and an electronic viewfinder. The photographer sees the image processed by the camera until the shutter button is pressed. It is convenient for a beginner to adjust exposure, shutter speed, ISO and other parameters. However, when using an electronic viewfinder, additional time is spent processing information, the image is transmitted with a delay, and the photographer does not have time to follow the movements in the frame. This drawback is especially noticeable in dark time days on budget models.

The built-in stabilization system also deserves attention. This innovative solution reduces the likelihood of blurry images when shooting handheld, regardless of the lens used.

2 Sony Alpha ILCA-68 Kit

Optimal price-quality ratio
Country: Japan (manufactured in Thailand)
Average price: RUB 41,504.
Rating (2019): 4.7

Today, the cost of most Sonys, which, however, have never been particularly affordable, often exceeds the amount of seventy thousand rubles. With functional similarity to such expensive models, this camera is even slightly cheaper than other advanced devices. It is not surprising that many users in their reviews call it the best balance between high quality and cost-effectiveness.

Like more expensive Sonys, the DSLR with an electronic viewfinder has an optical stabilizer built into it, minimizing image blur when shooting handheld. Since stabilization is done using sensor shift, the stabilizer does not affect lens compatibility in any way, which is convenient for photographers who like to experiment with lenses. The camera also received multi-zone exposure metering, which calculates the required amount of light for a high-quality photo. The model is best suited for static shooting.

1 Sony Alpha ILCA-77M2 Kit

Best fast shooting speed. Maximum viewfinder resolution
Country: Japan (manufactured in Thailand)
Average price: 84,590 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.9

By a large margin, the TOP of the best devices with an electronic viewfinder is led by a DSLR for those who often deal with shooting dynamic scenes, for example, sporting events. After all, the shooting speed in burst mode reaches as much as 12 frames per second, and this is an absolute record among SLR cameras that can be found in stores at the moment. With this camera the user will not miss a single moment. And an effective stabilizer will allow you to take the clearest pictures when shooting handheld in motion. Therefore, in terms of photo quality, Sony is not inferior to many professional cameras that are less convenient to use.

The list of the main advantages of the model, among other things, includes the best three-inch LCD screen with the highest resolution - 2,359,000 pixels. Also, according to reviews, the camera offers a huge number of settings, which makes it a good choice for amateurs and even professional photographers.

The best DSLR cameras with a waterproof body

Although a DSLR is traditionally considered a studio camera, some of the best modern DSLRs are not only relatively compact, but also unpretentious. Moisture is rightfully considered the main threat to devices. When water gets on the surface of a conventional device, it easily penetrates important components, causing minor malfunctions or even serious breakdowns. Fortunately, many well-known manufacturers have paid attention to this problem and have developed special waterproof models, the housing of which is quite sealed and does not allow moisture to pass through.

With such a DSLR, rain is not a hindrance for the photographer. This is a particular advantage for professional filming in the rain or outdoors. Water protection will allow you not to worry about your device even on the beach. Moreover, some waterproof gadgets can withstand short-term immersion in liquid. Therefore, the user can not only not worry about the safety of the camera in case of moisture, but also immerse themselves in the world of underwater photography! Mysterious world, full of bright colors and non-trivial views, can now be captured with a DSLR camera. At the same time, representatives of this category are functionally in no way inferior to their analogues who are more capricious to environmental conditions.

3 Nikon D810 Body

Capacious battery. Support for recording audio comments
Country: 4.8
Average price: RUB 171,900.
Rating (2019): Japan (manufactured in Thailand)

The top three worthy waterproof devices are opened by a professional SLR camera with protection from dust and direct water, suitable even for shooting in pouring rain. The camera that won a huge number of positive feedback, ideal for travelers. Indeed, thanks to a powerful battery, it is capable of shooting video for more than three hours without recharging, which is an amazing indicator not only for this category, but for all modern DSLRs.

The ability to voice record comments and remarks will significantly save time, allowing you to concentrate directly on creativity and photography. The maximum image resolution of 4912 pixels vertically and 7360 horizontally, as well as the best matrix resolution, make the camera one of the strongest representatives of its class. However, it is not suitable for beginners due to the abundance of settings and insufficiently detailed instructions.

2 Pentax K-1 Kit

Record video in AVI format. For all weather conditions
Country: Japan (made in China)
Average price: RUB 177,020.
Rating (2019): 4.8

Although Pentax is a little less well-known than companies like Canon or Nikon, this DSLR is familiar to most professional photographers who shoot in extreme conditions. After all, this is one of the few devices that is reliably protected not only from dust and water, but also from low temperatures. It can definitely be recommended to those looking for a reliable camera for shooting winter landscapes and even the northern lights. Unlike most competitors, this camera will not turn off or run out of charge in an instant in the cold.

At the same time professional quality photos and practicality do not interfere with the convenience of the gadget. A number of reviews mention pleasant and understandable ergonomics among the advantages of the device. A huge number of options and settings are successfully combined with a wealth of automatic modes, which means that even a beginner can use the model. An additional advantage support for many formats, including AVI.

1 Canon EOS 5D Mark III Body

Better water protection
Country: Japan
Average price: RUB 159,980.
Rating (2019): 4.9

Most waterproof DSLR cameras are only protected from short periods of rain and are not designed to withstand large volumes of liquid. According to the Canon brand, the Mark III can withstand up to 15 minutes of work in slanting downpours, and numerous tests and reviews confirm this. But if it gets wet for a longer period of time, it is still possible for water to get into the body.

Nevertheless, this is so far the only DSLR that can withstand even a slight immersion in water, but only for a couple of minutes. However, for full-scale underwater shooting, it is recommended to purchase a waterproof case designed specifically for this camera. When protected with a case, the DSLR is even suitable for taking photos while diving or surfing. The model's screen has an excellent viewing angle and good resolution, so it is comfortable to work with even in very bright light. In addition, thanks to the maximum number of focus points, it is easy to focus.

The emergence of smartphones with good cameras on the market has reduced the demand for digital cameras. However, in many respects, phones, even with a very cool camera, are inferior to full-fledged devices. They discharge faster and are less practical. But it is precisely these qualities that are so important when traveling or relaxing in nature. Let's look at the six most popular, best cameras of the current year.

Olympus SH-1

This camera is in great demand among travelers. A device in such a compact body and with such technical characteristics- a very successful combination. Basic parameters of the device:

  1. Appearance and dimensions. The Olympus SH–1 case measures 108.8 x 63.2 x 42.4 and weighs 271 grams. It is made of metal and rubber with an interesting texture reminiscent of leather. The build quality is really high. With moderate squeezing, no squeaks or crackles are heard. The gadget is available in black, white and silver colors.
  2. Interface and screen. In this model, the manufacturer traditionally used a 3-inch liquid crystal matrix with 460 thousand dots. This is almost two times less than what modern ultrazooms offer, but even this figure is enough for high-quality photographs. The display has reliable protection. The only downside is that it has a poorly designed sensor. The interface is user-friendly and the button menu is fully optimized for it. There are HDMI, USB, TV-out (analog) outputs.
  3. Peculiarities. An important improvement of the model is the presence of a built-in Wi-Fi module. But there are some shortcomings here too. You can only connect the camera to a smartphone permanently, although many similar devices are already connected in infrastructure mode. In pairs. During integration, the user is given few options: copying files to the phone's memory and managing OLYMPUS Image Share.
  4. Photography. The Olympus SH-1 camera has 16 megapixels. It also has a five-axis stabilizer, a wide-angle lens, 24x zoom, HDR shooting and Full HD video (60 frames per second). Maximum aperture - ?/3.0–6.9. The maximum photo size is 4608x3456, and the maximum video size is 1920x1080. Focal length range from 4.5 to 108 mm. Three flash modes: auto, fill and red-eye reduction.
  5. Autonomy. The model runs on a lithium-ion battery Li–92B, 3.5 Wh. The charge is enough to shoot 380 frames. This is a very good indicator. Plus, the camera can be charged via USB from a phone or laptop.
Olympus SH–1 is a device that is perfect for travelers. It has more advantages than disadvantages. Even slow autofocus, a poorly designed sensor and noise when shooting at night are not significant disadvantages, because the price of the camera is only 15 thousand rubles.

More information in the Olympus SH–1 video review:

Nikon Coolpix S9600

This is an inexpensive, lightweight and compact camera, the main feature of which is the possibility of 22x optical zoom for shooting distant objects. Let's take a closer look at the technical characteristics:
  1. Design and sizes. When making the model, the manufacturer used metal and plastic. The weight of the device is 206 grams, and the dimensions are 102x32x61 mm. The case has a built-in microphone and speakers.
  2. Display and interface. The resolution of the 3-inch TFT liquid crystal screen is 460 thousand pixels. There is no viewfinder. There are USB, HDMI ports, and a built-in Wi-Fi module.

The device supports SD, SDHC, SDXC memory cards and is equipped with a wide-angle NIKKOR lens (25–550 mm).
Reviews of the Nikon Coolpix S9600 are generally good. However, there are gaps in the body itself. The battery cover does not snap tightly, and the lens itself “pops out” in an awkward place, so the device is initially uncomfortable to hold in your hands. This is a matter of habit, but the manufacturer could have thought of such a moment. The camera costs about 15 thousand rubles.

And here is a video review of the device:

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX 100

The main feature of the device is undoubtedly a light-sensitive lens equipped with an optical stabilizer. Let's take a look at the other parameters below:
  1. Design, sizes. The body of the device is made of aluminum alloy, which is why it is significantly heavier than its analogues. The dimensions of the device are 114.8 x 66.2 x 55.0, and the weight with a memory card and battery is 393 grams. Although the assembly is carried out in China, its quality is impeccable. Ricoh WG-4

Quite deservedly, this device has received the greatest popularity among travelers of all the models presented here. And all because its body is incredibly durable and protected. Let's take a closer look at the Ricoh WG-4:
  1. Dimensions, design. The gadget itself is made of dense, textured, matte plastic, with glossy inserts on the front panel, and the screen has plexiglass protection. It is immediately worth noting that the case has a protection class of IPX8. This means that the device is not afraid of dust, can withstand falls from a height of up to two meters, works perfectly down to -10 degrees below zero and is suitable for use in water up to 14 meters deep. There is no fault with the assembly of the device. Dimensions 124x64x33 mm, and weight with battery - 236 grams.
  2. Interfaces, screen. The device is equipped with a liquid crystal matrix and a 3-inch display with a resolution of only 460 thousand pixels. As for the graphical interface, the fonts are clumsy and there is no anti-aliasing at all. But there are also advantages, for example, instant response to button controls and an intuitive menu. But most importantly, the user can independently program the navigation key, assigning the most important and frequently used controls. The Ricoh WG-4 has built-in HDMI and USB ports, but the device does not have a viewfinder.
  3. Photography. The 16 MP matrix is equipped with a back-illuminated CMOS sensor. Aperture?/2.8–4.9. The maximum photo frame size is 4608x3456 (4:3), 4608x2592 (16:9), 3456x3456 (1:1), and video - 1920x1080. As for ISO sensitivity 125-6400 units. Exposure metering operates in three modes: multi-segment, spot metering and center-weighted.
  4. Working mode. The model was equipped with a DMW–BCM13E lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 4.5 Wh. One charge is enough to take 240 frames with the GPS receiver turned off. But it is worth noting that if the module is turned on, the charge is consumed much faster. The charge display is catastrophically inaccurate and unfinished. The indicator shows either three segments or one at once.
  5. Additional options. Naturally, the main features and differences of the Ricoh WG–4 are the strength and security of the case. All tests confirmed the strength characteristics declared by the manufacturer, but questions remained regarding body pressure. The creators claim that WG-4 can withstand weights of up to 100 kg, but the fact that the device’s display is unlikely to remain intact after such manipulation raises doubts. Even with light pressure with your finger, you can see stains on the LCD base. The travel gadget also includes an altimeter, GPS receiver and compass.
The gadget's hardware still needs to be improved in many respects, but the body is unrivaled. In any case, Ricoh WG-4 deserves attention and finds its buyer. Its price is about 16 thousand rubles.

Best mirrorless cameras | Introduction

Mirrorless (or system) cameras have taken a significant share of the market previously held by DSLR cameras. The reason for this is compactness, a simpler and more reliable design, and in many cases - more high quality images at a comparable price.

There is also a reverse trend: SLR cameras are becoming more and more like mirrorless cameras from a functionality point of view. New opportunities are appearing in live view mode, video shooting mode is being improved - in a word, everything for which the presence of a mirror is, rather, a hindrance or an atavism. Why do you need a mirror at all if the camera takes excellent pictures without it?

At the same time, if earlier mirrorless cameras were, rather, the younger brothers of SLR cameras, now everything looks far from so obvious. First of all, in terms of price: now it is approximately the same if we are talking about models of the same level and generation.

Two things remained unchanged: the ability to change optics and various photo accessories, as well as a wide range of shooting modes even for the most inexpensive and simple model (since mirrorless there is a direct alternative to a DSLR).

Best entry-level mirrorless camera: Olympus PEN E-PL8

E-PL8 (from RUB 38,000 with lens) somewhat reminiscent of the first models of film “Leeks” and “FEDs” - the same uncompromising compactness, the same rounded ends, the same usage profile. The creators of the E-PL8 sought to achieve a better ratio of image quality and compactness of the camera.

The heart of the E-PL8 is a Live MOS sensor with a resolution of 16 MP (4608 x 3456), corresponding to the Four Thirds standard (17.3 x 13 mm). The proprietary TruePic VII processor is responsible for image processing. Despite its compact size, the new product is equipped with an image stabilizer based on sensor-shift, which operates in three planes and allows the use of shutter speeds up to 3.5 stops longer.

Considering that such a compact camera is supposed to be used with an equally compact pancake lens (otherwise it loses its main “trump card”), the presence of a built-in stabilization system is extremely valuable: all compact lenses for the micro 4/3 system do not have their own optical stabilizer.

The camera dimensions are 115 x 67 x 38 mm, weight – 357 g. Three color options are expected: black, white and brown. The stylish design is complemented by original Olympus leather cases and straps, made in the same color as the camera.

Autofocus is implemented based on the contrast detection method and cannot boast the same speed characteristics as SLR cameras. At the same time, in recent years, Olympus has continuously improved the focusing system in mirrorless cameras. If we evaluate the 81-point autofocus of the E-PL8, taking into account the fact that we are talking about a purely amateur camera, there should be no complaints about the speed and accuracy of autofocus.

The AF system offers some useful features that are typical for compacts: focusing in the face detection mode and touch focus. As you might guess, if touch focus is provided, then the camera’s LCD display is touch-sensitive. The display diagonal is 3 inches. The display can be tilted up and down and even rotated 180 degrees, so this camera is perfect for selfie lovers.

There are no “advanced” controls for the shooting process on the E-PL8 body. The shooting mode dial and the unnamed command dial (its functionality depends on the selected mode) are the main controls of the E-PL8. Everything else can be configured using several function buttons and a navigation pad located to the right of the display.

The USB connector complies with the 2.0 standard, so o high speed There's no point in dreaming when copying pictures. But there is a built-in Wi-Fi module, which can be used, among other things, for remote control of the camera using a smartphone.

One of the few features of the E-PL8 that is typical for higher-end digital cameras is its continuous shooting speed. 8 frames/s is an excellent indicator for amateur mirrorless cameras.

Video is recorded with a resolution of up to 1920x1080/30p and stereo sound, although in the era of widespread adoption of the 4K standard, these characteristics are unlikely to surprise anyone.

The BLS-50 battery allows you to take about 350 shots (measured using the CIPA method). Not a bad indicator for a casual camera!

So, the E-PL8 is reminiscent in spirit of the film rangefinders of yesteryear. This camera has a good sensor and image stabilizer, but everything else depends on the quality of the optics. Today, this is one of the most inexpensive models on the market - its cost is about 34 thousand rubles without a lens and about 40 thousand with a M.Zuiko 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom lens.

Note that for the open micro 4/3 standard there are many truly amazing lenses from Olympus, Panasonic, Leica and some second-tier optical manufacturers. We would recommend abandoning the standard zoom lens and purchasing a higher quality one, for example, the Olympus M.Zuiko 25mm F1.8.

Best mirrorless camera for videography: Panasonic Lumix DMC-G85

The first thing you notice when looking at the DMC-G85 (from $1000 with lens in the USA, not yet sold in Russia)- DSLR style design. What interesting things can this model offer?

In terms of photo quality, the DMC-G85 is close to the Olympus E-PL8 (it uses the exact same Live MOS sensor), but there is a difference: photos here look sharper, which is due to the absence of a low-pass filter in front of the sensor. The absence of an AA filter places special demands on post-processing of images in order to avoid the moire effect. In this regard, we prefer the Olympus approach: to get the same “glamorous” result that the PEN E-PL8 produces without any processing, in the case of the DMC-G85 you will have to tinker in a graphics editor. If you have such a desire, then you can squeeze more detail and quality out of this camera.

The camera chassis is made of magnesite. There is protection from rain and dust. The DMC-G85 can easily be confused with a DSLR, not only because of its design, but also given its relatively large dimensions: 128x89x74 mm, weight - about 500 g.

One of the key advantages of the DMC-G85 is ergonomics. The display rotates in all planes. There are two command disks. Both are easy to rotate with your thumb and forefinger while holding the camera with one hand. The function buttons Fn1 and Fn2/Q.Menu are also available in the same way. There are a total of 5 physical function buttons and 5 touch zones on the right edge of the display. All these buttons/zones can be assigned to one or another menu function, which makes the process of setting up the DMC-G85 during shooting extremely convenient.

The electronic viewfinder is made using OLED technology and has 2.36 million dots - it is exactly the same as in most other mirrorless cameras.

One charge allows you to take about 320 shots (measured using the CIPA method). This is not the best indicator. However, you can significantly increase battery life (up to three times) if you use the electronic viewfinder in power saving mode when shooting. In this mode, the EVF turns off automatically 3.5 seconds after the owner stops using the camera (using the eye detection sensor readings).

The sensor-shift stabilization system operates in five planes and can be used in combination with optical stabilization, which increases the effectiveness of combating image blur at long exposures. This is the second generation of the Dual IS 2 system, but it only works when using proprietary Panasonic lenses. Otherwise, you will have to choose which stabilization system to use - in the camera or in the optics.

The 49-point AF system is based on the contrast detection method and includes functions typical of point-and-shoot cameras: focusing with detection of faces in the frame, touch autofocus.

The camera is equipped with a Wi-Fi module, through which you can both control the shooting process from your smartphone (using the appropriate application), and upload pictures to your computer, view video from the camera, etc.

Video recording is one of the key areas of use for the DMC-G85. The camera allows you to shoot in 4K (3840x2160/30p) and 1920x1080/60p resolution. In video recording mode, the following functions are available: focus peaking ("enhancing the contours" of a focused object), highlighting overexposed areas and adjusting the microphone sensitivity level (when adjusting the microphone, you can turn on a filter against wind noise). For more serious videography tasks, there is an output for an external microphone. Color and contrast settings are provided, as when shooting photographs in JPEG mode.

Mass Market Contender: Canon EOS M5

M5 – flagship mirrorless from Canon. M5 (from RUB 84,000 with lens) equipped with a 24-megapixel CMOS matrix with support for Dual Pixel AF technology. The image resolution is 6000x4000, the physical size of the matrix is 22.3x14.9 mm (APS-C).

The creators of the M5 took the semi-professional SLR camera EOS 80D as a basis - the new product inherited from it a matrix with Dual Pixel AF technology. Dual Pixel AF technology debuts in mirrorless cameras Canon, and previously it was found in some SLR cameras from this manufacturer (it first appeared in the EOS 70D model). Today it is the most effective and fast system Live view AF from Canon.

In the central area of the sensor, which covers approximately 64% of the entire image, there are 49 hybrid photodiodes that are used for both shooting and focusing. These photodiodes are paired: they consist of two “halves” directed towards different sides from the lens axis. By analyzing the difference in brightness level received from such a photodiode, the camera determines the distance to the object and focuses on it, using the same principle that is implemented in the phase detection autofocus sensors of SLR cameras. The Dual Pixel AF system ensures fast and accurate focusing in photo mode and when recording video.

Unlike the Canon 80D DSLR camera, the new product uses a more powerful Digic 7 image processor. The speed characteristics are the same: 7 frames per second when using AF, or 9 frames with a fixed focus point.

Externally, the M5 resembles a professional Canon DSLR reduced in size by 2-3 times - from the 5D or 1D line. Compared to others mirrorless cameras, it has average dimensions: 116x89x61 mm, 427 g. On the upper end of the camera, along the edges, there are dials for shooting modes and exposure compensation, and to the left of the exposure compensation dial is a command dial. Another command dial is installed around the shutter button.

The LCD display has a diagonal of 3.2 inches. It can be tilted up to 85° or tilted down and rotated 180° when taking selfies. The screen is touch-sensitive and is used during shooting to quickly adjust individual parameters, highlight the focused object (focus peaking function) and select the subject to focus on. Note that the touch focus function, which we have encountered in other models, is implemented by Canon in a very original way and is called “Touch and Drag AF”. Instead of telling the camera where to focus by tapping your finger on the touch screen, we are asked to drag the focus frame along with the subject - this is important if the subject in the frame is moving. The function works even if the electronic viewfinder is used and the LCD monitor is turned off (!). In other words, the screen serves as a kind of “joystick” that allows you to track the target.

The electronic viewfinder is made using OLED technology and has 2.36 million dots - it is similar to that in the Panasonic DMC-G85.

Bluetooth and W-Fi/NFC available. Using the latter, you can remotely control the camera using a special smartphone application.

The LP-E17's battery can take about 295 shots on a single charge, which is the worst performance in our review. There is an economy mode that involves using only the EVF, in this case you can count on about 400 shots.

But perhaps the most obvious drawback of the Canon M5 is the lack of a 4K video recording mode. On the other hand, 1920x1080/60p quality is more than enough for 99% of current tasks. Another thing is that there are other negative aspects from the point of view of videography. In particular, you cannot use optical image stabilization; only electronic stabilization is available for video.
