L-carnitine is a natural and harmless way to lose weight and increase the effectiveness of training. How to take in liquid form. What is L-carnitine? Description

L-carnitine has anabolic, antihypoxic and antithyroid effects, stimulates the regenerative activity of tissues, improves appetite and metabolic processes. By stimulating fat metabolism, it slows down the breakdown of protein and carbohydrate structures. Amino acid also helps to enhance the enzymatic activity of gastric and intestinal juice, improve the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract. When playing sports, l-carnitine increases the effectiveness of training due to increased fat burning and muscle growth. In addition, it reduces the degree of lactic acidosis.

The amino acid L-carnitine accelerates the restoration of nervous tissue and has a neurotrophic effect.

El-carnitine is an amino acid that is chemically close to the B vitamins. It is also called vitamin B11. It can be synthesized in the body, but for normalization metabolic processes prescribe exogenous L-carnitine. You can get the amino acid from food or in the form of drugs.

What is the effect of el-carnitine

The amino acid has an anabolic, antihypoxic and antithyroid effect, stimulates tissue regeneration, improves fat metabolism, and helps to normalize appetite. L-carnitine alone is excreted by the body primarily in the liver. An amino acid obtained from food or in the form of drugs has similar properties. By stimulating fat metabolism, el-carnitine slows down the breakdown of carbohydrate and protein compounds.

The drug increases the production of secretion by the glands of the digestive tract, enhances the enzymatic activity of intestinal and gastric juice. During sports, el-carnitine prevents the excessive accumulation of lactic acid in the muscles and promotes the active breakdown of fat. It also accelerates the regeneration of nervous tissue.

L-carnitine is absorbed into digestive tract and excreted as metabolites by the kidneys.

Who is L-carnitine indicated for?

El-carnitine helps to increase endurance and training efficiency, and build muscle mass faster. The drug is prescribed to people with diseases of cardio-vascular system and the elderly. L-carnitine slows down the aging process in the brain, improves concentration, attention and memory. Children are prescribed an amino acid during the period of active growth for the normal formation of skeletal muscles and with a lack of body weight.

To compensate for the lack of L-carnitine, the drug can be useful for vegetarians and people with reduced appetite.

L-carnitine: release forms and dosages

L-carnitine is available in the form of tablets, capsules or syrup. Dosages are determined by the attending physician, taking into account the indications and the general condition of the body. Usually,

L-carnitine is one of the most popular sports supplements currently.

L-carnitine (L-carnitine) is a special substance that increases the rate of fat metabolism in the body, in other words, it performs the function. It is independently synthesized by the human body, subject to the presence essential vitamins and enzymes. In order for L-carnitine to be produced in sufficient quantities, a balanced diet and regular consumption of high-quality protein foods are necessary. Such products can be, for example, meat, cottage cheese or fish.

As a rule, if a person experiences heavy physical exertion or receives malnutrition, there is a lack of L-carnitine in the body. For this reason, all people who are on a diet and are actively involved in sports are recommended to supplement it.

A bit of history

Vladimir Gulevich first discovered l-carnitine in 1905.

L-carnitine was first discovered by Russian scientists V.S. Gulevich and R.P. Krimberg, studying the muscle tissues of animals. This happened over a century ago. The new substance got its name from the Latin word "carnis", which means "meat" in translation. Chemists learned how to artificially create L-cartitin much later, in the 1960s. The drug received positive reviews and gradually began to be used in medicine.

For the first time in big sport L-carnitine was introduced during the 1980 Olympics. The supplement was included in the diet of the Italian football team. As a result, L-carnitine has become widespread in the industry. sports nutrition and medicine. It is currently available as tablets, liquid and powder for dilution.

The action of L-carnitine

L-carnitine activates the process of burning subcutaneous fat and helps convert fat cells into energy. In some cases, it is the lack of this substance that leads to the development of obesity.

L-carnitine is currently available in powder, liquid, and tablet form.

Thanks to L-carnitine, fat molecules more actively penetrate the mitochondrial membranes. And mitochondria are a kind of "energy stations" located inside the cells of the body. This is where splitting occurs. nutrients releasing energy in the form of ATP.

Therefore, L-carnitine is, figuratively speaking, a “stoker” that “throws” fats into the furnace of your body. And, continuing this comparison with steam engines, we can say that the more coal is needed, the faster the steam locomotive goes. This means that more fat needs to be delivered to the mitochondria if you are actively moving. It would seem that this is an axiom, but many lose sight of it.

Given the above properties, many trainers recommend using L-carnitine to their clients in order to get rid of excess fat and bring weight back to normal. It is worth noting separately the prolonged effect of long-term use of L-carnitine for weight loss. The drug contributes to the rapid oxidation of not only existing fats, but also those coming from food. As a result, they do not accumulate, but immediately transfer energy to the body. It improves both physical and mental performance. After completing the course, this effect persists for several more months. In the case of proper nutrition, L-carnitine for weight loss will act until the start of the next dose.

In order for L-carnitine to work, and the fat began to actively go away, you need to lead a proper lifestyle and not skip workouts.

In general, we can say that L-carnitine helps:

  • convert the fat reserves already in the body into energy;
  • prevent the rapid deposition of newly ingested fats;
  • normalize blood cholesterol levels;
  • increase efficiency;
  • enrich blood cells with oxygen;
  • reduce muscle recovery time.

This is not all the wonderful abilities that L-carnitine has.

L-carnitine deficiency

The lack of l-carnitine during active training or a strict diet is fraught with fatigue and bad mood.

In the body, L-carnitine is produced with the participation of vitamin C, B vitamins, essential amino acids and a number of enzymes. A lack of any of these substances can cause a severe L-carnitine deficiency. Athletes, vegetarians, and all those who follow unbalanced diets most often suffer from this.

L-carnitine plays an important role in metabolic processes and its deficiency provokes:

  • decreased immunity;
  • fast fatigue;
  • cardiovascular diseases;
  • metabolic disorders and, as a result, the appearance of excess weight.

If you notice these symptoms while dieting or exercising vigorously, consider supplementing with L-carnitine. The main plus of the drug is its absolute safety when used correctly. After agreement with the attending physician, L-carnitine is allowed to be taken even by pregnant and lactating women.

How to take L-carnitine for weight loss as effectively as possible? Schemes of admission for those involved in sports and dieters are different.

If you exercise intensively at least 3 times a week, you need 1200 mg of L-carnitine for weight loss per day. This dose should be divided into 2 parts. The first should be taken shortly before meals in the form of capsules, and the second in liquid form 30 minutes before training.

  • 200 mg 15-20 minutes before breakfast;
  • 200 mg before lunch;
  • 200 mg before dinner;
  • 600 mg liquid pre-workout.

If you do not train, then it is advisable to drink L-carnitine for weight loss 1-2 capsules during meals 3 times a day. When body weight significantly exceeds the norm, the recommended dosage should be increased by 1.5-2 times. L-carnitine is taken for 1 month. Then you need a break for 1.5-2 months.

Of course, ideally, before you start using L-carnitine, you should consult a trainer about the dosage and make sure there are no contraindications.

Contraindications to taking L-carnitine are:

As you can see, there are not so many contraindications. L-carnitine is one of the most harmless sports supplements. However, it is worth noting that no matter how much we would like it, “super pills” do not exist.

Side effects

The main side effect that is possible when taking L-carnitine is a sharp increase in appetite. It is caused by the main property of the drug, which is to speed up the metabolism. Many manufacturers recommend taking L-carnitine for weight loss in conjunction with microcrystalline fiber (MCC). It helps to control appetite, and with it the diet is much easier.

But nutritionists note that with the right diet and reasonable physical activity, taking L-carnitine for weight loss will not cause any changes in appetite. To do this, adjust the usual low-calorie diet by increasing the number of meals up to 6 times a day. Fractional nutrition, rich in protein, fresh fruits and vegetables and completely excluding alcohol and sugar, will benefit the body and accelerate weight loss. L-carnitine is most effective in a training regimen that includes 3 strength training sessions (you can pick up in the "" section on our website) and 4-6 of varying intensity and duration.

Some people also claim that L-carnitine for weight loss causes increased anxiety and irritability. Most likely, this effect is due to the stimulating effect of the drug. If you notice this symptom, reduce the use of other drugs that stimulate the nervous system (caffeine and guarana). If this does not help, you need to consult a specialist about how best to take L-carnitine.

L-carnitine (L-carnitine), combined with training and proper nutrition, can do truly fantastic things!

Thus, L-carnitine is a revolutionary supplement that is absolutely safe for health. Proper intake of the drug, together with reasonable nutrition and training, will bring you closer to the figure of your dreams.

Flaws:

In sports nutrition, L-Carnitine is one of the most controversial supplements. Advertising slogans emphasize it amazing properties as a fat burner that is "used for weight loss by all fit", sports nutrition sellers add to this the benefits for gaining muscle mass, increasing energy and stamina, some people talk about the ability of carnitine to improve even sexual function. The Internet is filled with rave reviews of its effectiveness for weight loss ... And only incredulous scientists critically look at almost all of the listed properties of L-carnitine.

In this material, we will introduce you to what L-carnitine is and why it is needed in sports and medicine, we will understand its properties, look at what and for whom its deficiency in the diet is dangerous and whether athletes are at risk of deficiency .

L-carnitine entered the sports nutrition market as a weight loss drug in the 1980s. Then it was replaced by much more effective fat burners of another generation with stimulants, hormones, anabolic steroids in the composition.

In our time, in the words of one of the authors of the bodybuilding.com portal, "... there was a kind of resurrection of L-carnitine ... he returned and became even stronger than ever; only now not only in the form of a fat burner, but also a supplement that increases physical performance and helps recovery ..."

Let's see what lies behind these lofty words.

L-carnitine: what is it

Forms of l-carnitine in sports nutrition

"L-Carnitine" is a generic term for the three forms in which it is marketed. Different forms of l-carnitine are used for different purposes, and also contain different quantity active substance:

  • acetyl-L-carnitine - to improve brain function;
  • L-carnitine L-tartrate - as a supplement for sports to improve performance and power;
  • Glycine-Propinyl-L-carnitine - to improve the activity of the cardiovascular system.

An acetyl group attached to a carnitine molecule increases its ability to enter the brain where it acts as a powerful antioxidant, plays important role in the production of energy, as well as in the creation of an important neurotransmitter (a substance that is used to transmit nerve impulses). That is why, acetyl-L-carnitine is useful in protecting against aging processes and damage to nerve cells.

Different forms of carnitine contain different amounts of the active substance. The equivalent doses are as follows:

(630-2500mg Acetyl-Carnitine) = (1000-4000mg L-Carnitine L-Tartrate) = (1000-4000mg Glycine Propynyl L-Carnitine).

What foods contain l-carnitine

The sources of carnitine from which it enters the body are primarily animal products.

It is found in large quantities in meat ( the redder it is, the more), in smaller ones - in milk (mainly in whey) 1 and in much smaller ones - in herbal products such as avocados and soybeans. Carnitine is integral part human breast milk

Animal foods contain significantly more carnitine than plant foods. And the redder the meat, the higher its concentration

The US National Institutes of Health recommends following products rich in carnitine 16:

Carnitine in natural products is better absorbed: by 57-84%, and in the form of an additive - by only 14-18% 3 . Probably, the size of the dose matters: at small doses, absorption is more complete.

On average, non-vegetarians eat about 2-12 micrograms of carnitine per kilogram of body weight during the day, vegetarians - significantly less than 4.5. For an omnivore ~100 kg, this is approximately 1 mg daily.

Dose of carnitine in special supplements a thousand times higher: 1-4 grams. With such a dosage, even with low assimilation, about 250-500 mg remains in the body, which is much more than from meat products.

Carnitine in natural products is absorbed much better than supplements; however, in supplements, its concentration is 1000 times higher

What is l-carnitine for? Useful properties of carnitine

Carnitine is involved in a large number of functions in the body, which explains why it is needed.

Selling sites and research portals slightly differ in the description of its roles and benefits for the body. In general, the overall picture of the beneficial properties of L-carnitine is as follows:

  • fat burning(in theory)

For scientists and researchers, unlike athletes and salespeople, it is more common to talk only about the theoretical ability of L-carnitine to increase fat burning.

Important: Numerous studies on the fat burning effect are very controversial and generally refute it (see ours).

Most often, the effect of burning fat is explained by scientists by increasing physical activity, by getting more calories from carnitine supplements.

Theoretically, carnitine should be a good fat burner, but studies do not support this; Most often, scientists explain the possible fat-burning effect by a banal increase in calories in the diet due to carnitine supplements.

  • Removal of toxic compounds

It's about the by-products of fat burning; L-carnitine prevents their accumulation in the body.

  • Stimulation of brain activity

Carnitine is able to increase the vigilance and potential of mitochondria, ensuring better functioning of neurons.

  • Mitigation side effects aging
  • Fight depression and chronic fatigue
  • Improving Sexual Health
  • Improving blood vessel health
  • Protection of nerve cells and their recovery after damage due to diabetes and diabetic neuropathy
  • Increase in sports performance

This refers to the effect of the use of L-carnitine on increasing endurance and reducing fatigue.

Scientific studies do not support this. See our research.

  • Benefits for building muscle mass

Scientific studies do not support the effectiveness of L-carnitine as a supplement for gaining muscle mass and increasing muscle strength. See our research.

Carnitine deficiency

Carnitine deficiency can be observed when it is insufficiently supplied with food in some categories of people or when the mechanism of its absorption and synthesis in the body is disturbed.

1 Veganism and vegetarianism

The first who fall into the risk category are vegetarians and vegans, because. their diet does not contain animal products 5 rich in carnitine. They may be advised to take additional carnitine in the form of supplements. Studies show that when ingested, carnitine is absorbed very efficiently 5 , but poorly transported to the muscles 6 .

In general, despite the obviousness of the problem, there is very little research on the benefits of carnitine supplementation for vegetarians.

Vegetarians and vegans are at risk for carnitine deficiency due to the lack of animal products in their diets.

2 Athletes

As for athletes, according to some scientists, they are not at risk carnitine deficiency and do not need its additional intake 17 .

Athletes are not at risk of carnitine deficiency and do not need additional carnitine intake.

The lack of carnitine is especially dangerous for the heart muscle, due to the high energy requirement.

3 Medications and Carnitine Deficiency

Some medicines can lead to a decrease in carnitine levels. Thus, a cardiac drug (Mildronate) leads to an 18% decrease in carnitine levels at 4 weeks of intake and may contribute to the development of its deficiency 6 .

4 Diseases with carnitine deficiency

With a chronic lack of l-carnitine, the following conditions can develop:

  • dementia 8
  • muscle weakness and impaired liver function 9
  • cardiomyopathy (disease of the heart muscle) 10
  • hypoglycemia (lack of blood glucose)

Higher doses of carnitine are used to treat these and other conditions.

Carnitine deficiency can be observed in some cancer, so it is being investigated as an adjuvant in the treatment of cancer.

In one study, a gradual increase in carnitine doses (0.5 g for 2 days, 1 g for 2 days, 2 g for 10 days) taken by patients with advanced cancer and carnitine deficiency resulted in a decrease in fatigue, improvement general well-being and a decrease in the degree functional disorders associated with cancer.

At the same time, a significant increase in muscle mass and appetite was also observed. For this category, dosages up to 3000 mg per day have been shown to be safe 11-15 .

Summary: what do we know about L-carnitine and why is it needed

The most common answer to the question of what is L-carnitine and what it is for is a fat burner. But scientific studies do not support its effectiveness for weight loss.

Most studies demonstrate the benefits of L-carnitine as a supplement to improve brain, heart, and vascular health.

Athletes are not at risk for carnitine deficiency and do not need it. additional reception. But even when they do, athletic performance doesn't improve significantly.

L-carnitine supplementation may be recommended for older adults and vegans/vegetarians, as well as for some medical conditions.

Of all the forms, acetyl-L-carnitine and L-carnitine are the most popular and effective.

Why does the body need l-carnitine

L-carnitine has anabolic, antihypoxic and antithyroid effects on the body, accelerates tissue regeneration, increases appetite and increases the intensity of fat metabolism. It stabilizes the metabolism of coenzyme A and slows down the breakdown of proteins and carbohydrates by mobilizing fat depots. Synthesis of amino acids occurs mainly in the liver.

L-carnitine stimulates the enzymatic activity of the gastrointestinal tract, increasing appetite and facilitating the process of digestion. With strong physical activity reduces the formation of lactic acid, reducing the intensity of muscle pain after exercise. Improves nutrition of nerve fibers and accelerates their healing after injuries. With active sports, l-carnitine accelerates the burning of fatty elements between muscle fibers.

digestibility

After oral administration, the drug is almost completely absorbed from small intestine. Maximum content the active substance in the blood plasma is observed after 3 hours, and the therapeutic concentration lasts up to 9 hours. l-carnitine easily penetrates into the myocardium and liver, somewhat more difficult - into the skeletal muscles. It breaks down in the body to acyl esters, excreted mainly in the urine.

Overdose

With an overdose, dyspeptic syndrome sometimes occurs - abdominal pain, bloating and nausea. Patients with elevated urea levels may develop myasthenic disorders. If the above symptoms appear, you should immediately stop taking l-carnitine, rinse your stomach with plenty of warm water, take adsorbents and consult a doctor.

Indications

Indications for admissionl-carnitine:

  • Regular physical and mental loads, preparation for competitions, development of aerobic performance, increase in speed-strength indicators.
  • Strength training for gaining muscle mass.
  • Diet to reduce body fat percentage.
  • Reduced post-workout pain.
  • Diseases of the cardiovascular system.
  • Growth retardation in children, prematurity and poor sucking reflex in infants.
  • Poor appetite, a period of active muscle gain.
  • Vegetarian diet.
  • Perversion of appetite and physical exhaustion.
  • Skin diseases - psoriasis, eczema, focal scleroderma.
  • Senile mental degradation and decreased mood, attention and memory in the elderly.
  • Diseases caused or accompanied by carnitine deficiency - myopathies, mitochondrial pathologies, cardiomyopathies, genetically determined diseases with mitochondrial deficiency.
  • The recovery period after a stroke of the brain.
  • Alzheimer's disease, Down syndrome and Parkinson's disease.
  • Alcoholic or drug intoxication.

L-carnitine contraindications and side effects

Contraindications for admissionl-carnitine:

  • Individual sensitivity to the components of the drug.
  • 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy.
  • Lactation.

Side effectsl-carnitine

  • With an increased content of urea in the blood, muscle weakness may develop.
  • Allergic reactions.
  • The appearance of mild euphoria a few hours after taking the drug.
  • Rarely, nausea may occur. intestinal disorders and pain in the stomach.
  • Isolated cases of insomnia have been described after taking the maximum allowable doses.

special instructions

Athletes who want to reduce the percentage of body fat are advised to take l-carnitine 2-3 hours before the intended load. To gain muscle mass, it should be consumed immediately before training. It is better to drink the drug 30-40 minutes before meals. Simultaneous intake of l-carnitine with protein foods, which slows down the absorption of the amino acid from the small intestine, should be avoided. It is advisable to use the syrup undiluted with water after taking the full dose.

drug interaction

The simultaneous use of l-carnitine with lipoic acid and anabolic steroids mutually potentiates the therapeutic effect, enhancing the effect of the drugs. Glucocorticosteroids cause the accumulation of amino acids in almost all organs and tissues, except for the liver.

Terms of sale

Sold in pharmacies and sports nutrition stores without a prescription.

Storage conditions and shelf life

L-carnitine is valid for 12 months from the date of manufacture. Store in a dark, dry place, at a temperature not exceeding 25°C. After opening the bottle, the syrup is good for no more than 2 weeks.

L-carnitine reviews

Most people who took elcarnitine were satisfied with its effect. Respondents note an improvement in mood and memory, activation of thought processes and increased stamina. In premature babies and children with slow weight gain, appetite increases and body weight begins to increase. Athletes increase the duration and intensity of training.

Some of the respondents did not feel any changes in their condition after completing the course of taking l-carnitine. Regardless of the result of the drug, side effects were extremely rare. Mostly it was a feeling of heaviness in the abdomen and allergic reactions. Symptoms often resolved after discontinuation without medical intervention.

L-carnitine for weight loss reviews

Most people who took l-carnitine for weight loss confirmed its high effectiveness. In combination with exercise and following the diet, the drug contributed to the rapid breakdown of the fat layer, especially under the skin and between muscle fibers. For some respondents, the percentage of fat in the body did not decrease even with long-term use of l-carnitine. In most cases, this was due to non-compliance with the regimen of training and diet, as well as severe diseases of the endocrine system.
