Under Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, melon and watermelon were grown in greenhouses even near Moscow - in Izmailovo (now it is an urban area), but in the future, cultivation of gourds in closed ground was practiced very rarely.

Description. An annual hard-haired plant of the Cucurbitaceae family. It has a highly branched, shallow root system penetrating into the soil.
The stem is indistinctly faceted, creeping, branched, up to 3 m long. The leaves are alternate, round-heart-shaped, five-lobed, serrated, 6-20 cm long. The flowers are unisexual (sometimes bisexual).
